With the USC football program led by head coach Lincoln Riley, the team is looking to reach the high aspirations that have been set for the school, especially with quarterback Jayden Maiava. As the USC football team faces a brutal schedule ahead, rival coaches would praise Maiava, with one even comparing him to former Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams.
In Adam Rittenberg’s latest intel piece for ESPN, opposing coaches would talk about each of their conference’s best quarterbacks, as Big Ten coaches spoke about Maiava.
While Maiava’s production didn’t display a true dual-threat player, rushing for 157 yards last season, one Big Ten coach would say that he certainly “has the ability to be a better runner” than Riley has ever had, even reminding him of Williams. He is now with the Chicago Bears and was a No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

“He reminds me of Caleb [Williams] in some ways. He’s a good passer, he can run, he can throw, he’s accurate, and I felt like he was pretty poised back there. Guys were teeing off on him, he got hit and came back and stood back up in the pocket and kept making plays. He definitely can do that,” Maiava said.

Last season with the USC football program, Maiava recorded 3,711 yards to go along with 24 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and an 89.9 quarterback rating. His season would garner a positive response from one Big Ten defensive coordinator, saying Maiava has “that stature about him.”
“He did a really good job of managing the game, showed composure, he threw the ball really well. He’s got that stature about him,” one Big Tem defensive coordinator said.
As his throwing numbers have been improving, if Lincoln and Maiava show off their running skills, that could change the offense for the better. Either way, ever since Riley made the move to play Maiava in 2024, it proved to be a good decision.
Maiava and the rest of the Trojans look to further improve as the opening game comes on August 29 against San Jose State.
