The USC football team has had many memorable battles with Notre Dame on the gridiron. The rivalry isn’t getting played this year, to the dismay of USC and Notre Dame fans. Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley addressed getting Notre Dame back on the schedule, during Big Ten Media Days.
“We want to play the game. I want to play the game. We would be playing the game if some things came true that were said,” Riley said, per On3.
USC and Notre Dame played each other annually for a long time. It is one of the oldest rivalries in college football. While it may not get the same press as Ohio State and Michigan, it was always a heated battle.

Despite engaging in contract talks, USC and Notre Dame couldn’t come to an agreement to continue playing the rivalry in 2026.
“I think everybody knows how I feel about the game,” Riley said at his press conference before the Alamo Bowl last year, per On3. “I’ve said it multiple times. One of my first thoughts when I took the job at USC was getting to be a part of that rivalry. I have a deep respect for college football. Been a part of some great rivalries. Obviously, this is right there at the top. It’s pretty simple. We both worked for months to try and find a solution. Notre Dame was very vocal about the fact they would play us anytime, anywhere.”
Notre Dame plays as an independent in football. A win over USC goes a long way each year in helping their resumé for the College Football Playoff. USC meanwhile now plays in the Big Ten, after spending many years in the Pac-12.
Time will tell when Notre Dame-USC is back on the college football schedule.
