USC's biggest problem on defense is a pass rush that can't get home

USC football has immense talent on the roster. However, that still has not negated the fact that in the last few weeks, the defense has been underwhelming in more ways than one. One big issue for USC's defense is the lack of pressure it gets on opposing quarterbacks. The Ducks' offense had a big offensive day as a result of that, as did Rutgers the week before.

In a recent tweet, writer Kendell Hollowell perfectly captures the Trojans' biggest flaw on defense through the start of the season. Here is what he had to say:

"Through five games, USC’s starting defensive line has a combined 1.5 sacks. That’s unacceptable."

The Trojans have allowed opposing quarterbacks enough time to shred them through the air. The best example was recently when backup quarterback Dylan Raiola threw for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Trojans did not get him on the ground once. That game would have looked a lot different if any of the Trojans' top defenders were more productive on passing downs.

The Trojans' lack of pressure is becoming the theme of this season's defensive struggles. Obviously, another glaring issue is the play in the secondary. However, when you are giving the quarterback all day to throw, they are going to have success. Against Fresno State in Week 1, USC was blitzing, and its defensive backs were even getting sacks. That was the Trojans' best defensive game. If the Trojans cannot rely on their front 4 to generate pressure, that may have to go back to that game plan.

Whatever needs to be done, Gary Patterson and the Trojans need to start having success in this category. Not having any type of pressure on the quarterback is a ripple effect that can cause your defense to fall apart. As of late, the Trojans haven't been able to do anything well defensively. This is an area that is a good place to get shored up first. If not, Dylan Raiola will not be the last quarterback to light up USC.
