Vanderbilt Commodores: Make Interesting QB Decision for 2026

In one and a half weeks, the Vanderbilt Commodores host the Austin Peay Governors at FirstBank Stadium for Week 1 of the regular season. Throughout the spring and fall, Vanderbilt has held an intense quarterback competition to replace Diego Pavia. Pavia spent the past two years with the Commodores, finishing with a 17-9 record and placing second in the 2025 Heisman Trophy race.
The first competitor is redshirt junior Blaze Berlowitz. After spending 2023 at New Mexico State, Berlowitz transferred to Vanderbilt in 2024, teaming up with Diego Pavia. He did not play in 2024 but served as the backup quarterback in 2025. He has the most experience of the two, completing 19 of 36 pass attempts for 265 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception across seven appearances.
The second challenger is true freshman Jared Curtis. Curtis played high school football at Nashville Christian, winning back-to-back TSSAA Division II-A state championships in 2024 and 2025. He originally committed to Georgia in March 2024, later decommitting in October before recommitting in May 2025. He ultimately changed his mind again and committed to Vanderbilt in December 2025 as the highest-rated football recruit in school history.
The Vanderbilt Commodores make an interesting QB decision for 2026
According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Vanderbilt has named Blaze Berlowitz the starting quarterback for Week 1 against Austin Peay, marking his first career start. Berlowitz ultimately won because of his experience and the offense being more consistent with him under center. However, Jared Curtis is also expected to receive playing time.
