Unlike most of the programs ranked ahead of them, the Hurricanes have multiple starting-caliber running backs. Although local star Mark Fletcher Jr. is the undisputed top option, the rest of the supporting cast is capable of delivering a significant impact on the field.
CharMar Brown was the only other running back last season with at least 100 rushing attempts. He scored seven touchdowns, including two against Florida. Brown is known to bring power to the backfield and is useful in short-yardage situations.
Girard Pringle Jr. showed flashes of what he brings in a limited freshman campaign.
In the final four games of the regular season, the Tampa, Florida, native shined. Pringle Jr. rushed 48 times for 302 yards and scored two total touchdowns. The 19-year-old reportedly planned to enter the transfer portal, but decided to stay put instead. Pringle Jr. is a speedy running back, but added muscle during the summer.
Coming off an injury-riddled season, Jordan Lyle is attacking fall camp with a chip on his shoulder. After starting in the season opener against Notre Dame, things weren’t the same for the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native. Lyle rushed just 35 times for 108 yards and scored one touchdown, which came against Stanford.
The 20-year-old will have opportunities to re-establish himself on the college football scene.
The head of the snake, Fletcher Jr., played a significant role in the Hurricanes’ run to the National Championship. He rushed 75 times for a College Football Playoff record 507 yards and scored three touchdowns. Rather than declare for the NFL Draft, Fletcher Jr. decided to return to Coral Gables for a senior and farewell season.
Joining the room is freshman and former four-star recruit Javian Mallory. He rushed 434 times for 3,848 yards and scored 52 touchdowns in four years at West Boca Raton Community High School. Although it’s likely Mallory hardly sees the field, several well-established veterans surround him to provide mentorship.
The Hurricanes running back room could prove to be the very best in the country. No matter who is in the backfield, go things are likely to happen.
