Week 8 Preview: Merritt Island-Eau Gallie collide for district lead

District play heats up in Week 8 of the high school football season Oct. 9. The biggest game of the season so far kicks off at Eau Gallie as undefeated Merritt Island faces the Commodores for first place in District 8-3A.

In total, there are six all-Brevard games this week. In Class 3A, Astronaut heads to Palm Bay and Titusville plays Rockledge. Satellite-Bayside and Cocoa Beach-Space Coast square off in SSAA play while undefeated Calvary Chapel and Merritt Island Christian meet in 8-man.

Here’s a preview of the Week 8 slate. All games kick off at 7 p.m.

FHSAA

Merritt Island (6-0) at Eau Gallie (4-2)

The most highly anticipated game of the 2026 season takes place in Melbourne with both teams looking to continue their winning ways off a bye week.

Merritt Island has steamrolled its opponents this season, outscoring them 253-102. After a 1-2 start, Eau Gallie rattled off three straight wins over Rockledge, Cocoa and Astronaut.

The game pits two senior quarterbacks in Merritt Island’s Kevin Verpaele and Eau Gallie’s Joseph Allen. Verpaele sports a 68.6% completion percentage, 1,557 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. Allen completed 61.3% of his passes for 1,347 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Both squads feature a deep receiving corps with Merritt Island having six pass catchers with over 130 yards and Eau Gallie sporting four. Mustangs sophomore Elijah Mitchell caught 24 passes for 523 yards and five touchdowns. Commodores junior Zay Hawkins recorded 22 receptions for 437 yards and four touchdowns.

The biggest separator on offense is the running games. The Mustangs rushed for nearly 1,000 yards led by junior Zaylan Chapple’s 567 yards and six touchdowns. Eau Gallie has played without sophomore X’Zavier Corbin since Week 3 and have 421 rushing yards as a team.

Two of the best linebackers in the county will go head-to-head in Merritt Island’s Alain Adams and Eau Gallie’s Gabriel Player. Adams posted 61 tackles and one fumble recovery. Player is at 45 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, seven sacks and one interception.

Commodores sophomore Captain Rolle has intercepted four passes this season. Mustangs senior Kamar Fielder picked off two passes. Both will look to take away the opponents’ best wide receiver.

Merritt Island will look to stay undefeated and snap a five-game losing streak to Eau Gallie. The Commodores look to remain unbeaten in district play and control their own destiny for the district title.

Titusville (5-2) at Rockledge (1-5)

Titusville and Rockledge meet for the first time since 2021 after both teams played in non-district games last week.

The Terriers defeated Davenport 43-6 in their fourth game of scoring more than 40 points and allowing less than 10 points.

It was a balanced offensive performance for Titusville as senior Remy Vigne threw for 174 yards and the Terriers rushed for 204 yards behind 121 yards from junior Tamarion Walker.

Vigne threw touchdown passes to juniors Malik Britt and Deion Bland and senior Jason Dunlap. Terriers senior Tank Harvey and junior Brian Billingsley rushed for scores.

On defense, seniors Cedric Wiley and Semaje Glover recorded seven tackles. Glover sacked the Broncos quarterback once and senior Nate Mosley recovered a fumble.

Rockledge lost 21-10 at Melbourne Central Catholic last week. The Raiders defense held the Hustlers to 18 points below their season average.

Raiders junior Vondexter Tyler racked up 11 tackles and two passes defensed. Senior Dontavius Harvey and sophomore Terrance Welch sacked the quarterback once. Rockledge senior Jamarion Manning intercepted one pass and sophomore Terrell Bell recovered a fumble.

The lone touchdown on offense for Rockledge was a touchdown pass from junior Carter Kemmerling to senior Mike Gonzlaez. The senior caught nine passes for 65 yards. On the ground, freshman John Holmes Jr. and junior Antonio Amerson-Brown combined for 144 rushing yards.

Astronaut (3-3) at Palm Bay (2-4)

The War Eagles and Pirates square off after each team secured a win over Brevard County teams on Oct. 2. Both seek their first district win of the season.

Astronaut defeated Space Coast 29-18 on two rushing touchdowns by sophomore Jayden Brown and one from senior Jaquan Hagans and junior Maleek Thomas. The War Eagles defense held Space Coast to its second-fewest points of the season.

Palm Bay recorded its largest shutout win since 2014 with a 50-0 win over Cocoa Beach. Beginning in the second quarter, junior Mik Zades threw two touchdowns to sophomore Gio Spann. Senior Demetrius Andrews and junior Kayden Fonte scored one rushing touchdown.

Jensen Beach (4-2) at Heritage (4-3)

This is likely for all the marbles in District 13-4A as the Panthers (3-0) and Falcons (2-0) are the only two undefeated teams in the district with three weeks left in the regular season.

Heritage shut out Sebastian River 29-0 in Week 7 for its third straight district shutout win. The Panthers have outscored their district foes 115-0. Defensively, senior Cordae Copeland recorded a season-high 10 tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack. Junior Kevan Smith intercepted one pass and sophomore Orlando Bembry posted one sack.

Jensen Beach is coming off a 35-0 win over Port St. Lucie on Sept. 25. The Falcons lean on the passing game with 824 receiving yards. Senior Sylvester Brinkley caught 17 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns this season. The playmaking Falcons defense tallied 12 sacks, eight interceptions and two fumble recoveries.  

Lake Howell (4-2) at Melbourne (4-2)

Melbourne hosts Lake Howell with one game separating the two sides in the District 5-5A standings. The Silverhawks are 2-0 in district play and the Bulldogs are 1-1 after beating Viera 42-13 last week.

It was an efficient performance by Melbourne scored five touchdowns on 30 plays. Bulldogs sophomore Tyrese Jefferson rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns and he caught a 41-yard touchdown pass. Junior Will Reinhold threw for 152 yards and touchdowns to seniors Jeremiah Thomas and DJ Scott and Jefferson.

Melbourne sophomore Aaron Pierce tied for the team lead with nine tackles and one interception. Sophomore Jace Richardson and TJ Ross recorded nine tackles with Ross tacking on one sack. Junior Silas Walters had the other sack.

Lake Howell shut out Lyman 54-0 on Sept. 25 to extend its winning streak to three games. Silverhawks junior Brycen Marbrey threw for 1,307, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions. On the ground, Lake Howell rushed for 979 yards and 10 touchdowns this season with four runners of at least 20 carries.

Silverhawks senior Troy Williams Jr. leads the defense with 41 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Senior Colyn Quinn recorded a team-high 10 tackles for loss and two sacks. As a defense, Lake Howell recovered eight fumbles and intercepted two passes.

Oviedo (4-2) at Viera (3-3)

Viera hosts Oviedo with the Lions one game ahead in District 5-5A at 2-0. The Hawks suffered their first district loss of the season at Melbourne.

The only bright spot came from the full return of senior Duke Butler, who rushed for 98 yards on nine attempts and two touchdowns. Sophomore Jaamal Crittington will look to get the passing game going after throwing for 171 yards and one interception last week.

Hawks senior Dimitri Jean recorded his second double-digit tackle game of the season with 11 versus Melbourne. Sophomore Derek Schmadeke posted six tackles and two tackles for loss.

Oviedo rides a four-game winning streak into Viera after a 61-13 win at East River on Sept. 25. The Lions featured a balanced offense with 23 more rushing yards than passing yards.

Sophomore Sebastian Galeano threw 1,068 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. Senior tailback Johnnie Cobbs gained 568 yards and five touchdowns. Four pass catchers have over 130 receiving yards.

Oviedo juniors Evan Sorkness and Davin Scott anchor the defense. Sorkness recorded a team-high 46 tackles. Scott is second with 36 tackles and a team-high four sacks.

The Master’s Academy (Oviedo) (3-3) at Holy Trinity (4-2)

After three straight games in south Florida, Holy Trinity plays its first home game since Sept. 11 versus The Master’s Academy.

Holy Trinity saw its three-game winning streak snapped at John Carroll Catholic last week with a 39-14 defeat.

The Tigers rushed for 28 yards on 15 attempts. In the air, sophomore Jacorey Mills and senior Chandler Hendley recorded a combined 126 receiving yards. John Carroll Catholic finished the game with 475 total yards on four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

The Master’s Academy is coming off a 26-8 defeat to Mount Dora Christian Academy on Sept. 25. The SSAA side threw for 1,007 yards with three different quarterbacks. Eagles freshman Gavin Saichareune caught 17 passes for 270 yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore Luke Dezonia also has 270 receiving yards on 29 receptions.

TMA junior Tyler Grinch recorded a team-high 43 tackles and three interceptions. Junior Johnny Elkins picked off four passes and junior Trey Crump recovered two of the team’s nine fumbles this season.

Centennial (1-5) at Cocoa (1-4)

Cocoa looks to flush last week’s 49-3 district defeat at The First Academy. The Tigers defense allowed 409 total yards to a team squarely in contention for the Open Division.

Tigers junior Anthony Whaley produced on both sides of the ball with eight tackles, one interception and two receptions for 41 yards. Cocoa senior Tank White recorded his best game of the season with six receptions for 106 yards. Sophomore Kadin Claflin-Coy completed 24-of-33 passes for 318 yards.

Centennial enters on a five-game losing streak in Class 6A. After beating Lake Worth 53-14 in the season opener, the Eagles have been outscored 226-24 including three straight shutouts.

SSAA

Satellite (7-0) at Bayside (3-4)

The Scorpions look to match last year’s 8-0 start after picking up their second win over an FHSAA opponent last week at Eustis.

Satellite won 49-6 for its fourth game of scoring more than 40 points and its sixth game of allowing less than 10 points.

Bayside knocked off previously undefeated Boca Raton Christian with a 38-35 win. Bears senior Joey Costa threw for 214 yards and 3 touchdowns. Junior Zion Jones rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Senior Evan Sherburne caught two touchdown passes for 55 yards.

Bayside senior Isaiah Brenes recorded a team-high 10 tackles. Senior Logan Norris, junior Caiden Cavzos and sophomore Braylen Perri picked off one pass.

It’ll be the first meeting between Satellite and Bayside since 2023.

Cocoa Beach (5-2) at Space Coast (5-2)

Both teams meet looking to bounce back from road defeats to FHSAA opponents on Oct. 2.

Space Coast lost 29-18 at Astronaut as junior Zion Sandy threw for 194 yards, rushed for 163 yards and scored a touchdown. Vipers senior Kadyn Thomas caught five passes for 101 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Charlie Williams led the team with nine tackles.

Cocoa Beach seeks to snap a two-game losing in which it was outscored 105-13. The Minutemen lost 50-0 at Palm Bay behind 134 total yards of offense.

Senior Ryan Rogers rushed for 58 yards and threw for 55 yards in his first game at quarterback this season. Junior Jordon Rooks posted a team-high six tackles.

Cocoa Beach seeks its first win over Space Coast since 2012. The Vipers have won the last five meetings.

SSAA, 8-man

Calvary Chapel (6-0) at Merritt Island Christian (7-0)

The biggest 8-man game of the season commences on Oct. 9 with Calvary Chapel and Merritt Island Christian squaring off in a matchup of undefeated teams.

Calvary Chapel, which doubled last year’s win total on Sept. 25, seeks its first win all-time against Merritt Island Christian.

Eagles senior Gavin Stewart rushed for 691 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Stewart scored 14 of the team’s 17 offensive touchdowns this season.

Cougars senior Maddox Martinson engines the offense with 887 passing yards and 17 touchdowns to go with 244 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Junior Korbin Kugler leads the team with 471 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Senior wide receivers Micah Branch and John Hey combined for 24 receptions for 775 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Eighth grader Waylon Perkins leads the MICS defense with 46 tackles and one interception. Junior Shane Chandler picked off two passes. Senior Josh Clark and junior Mason Van Slyke produced two sacks.
