Clark Lea was hired at Vanderbilt in December of 2020, more than a year before Kirby Smart won his first national championship as Georgia football’s coach.

Lea, like Smart, returned to the alma mater where he played to become head coach.

Smart was a safety at Georgia and Lea was a fullback for the Commodores.

Lea went on to become defensive coordinator at Notre Dame from 2018-2020 after coaching linebackers at multiple stops.

Lea is 29-37 at Vanderbilt heading into Saturday's game at No. 2 Georgia.

His team is 3-1 this season, 0-1 in the SEC after winning 10 games in 2025 for the first time in program history.

“They've got a great program, a great team,” Smart said. “They arguably should have made the playoffs last year with the record they had and the teams they beat. He does a tremendous job there, and they're really a physical football team, made in the same mold with a defensive coach as us.”

Vanderbilt is 0-3 against Georgia under Lea, losing 62-0 and 55-0 his first two years and 37-20 in 2023 in Nashville.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for Kirby Smart and the program he’s built,” Lea said. “He’s an alum, he’s a guy that has built a program that has become a standard bearer in college football.”

Georgia vs. Vanderbilt predictions, picks, odds

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Thursday, Oct. 1

  • Georgia 34, Vanderbilt 10: We've seen enough of these two teams to know that Georgia is a national title contender and Vanderbilt has taken a step back from 2025 and perhaps 2024. The Commodores will be a tough out for some other SEC teams on their schedule, but the Bulldogs shouldn't be one of them. Georgia should be able to control the line of scrimmage and make it a long day for the Commodores.
  • Spread: Georgia -25
  • Over/under: 50.5
  • Moneyline: Georgia -3000, Vanderbilt +11500
