‘What Is His Record at Colorado University?’ — CFB Fans Disagree as Deion Sanders Tries To Explain Why His Critics Are Out to Get Him

Entering his fourth season, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders faces increased pressure to produce results. However, while Coach Prime has defended his unconventional rise to the head-coaching ranks, his latest comments have sparked a strong reaction among college football fans.
Deion Sanders’ Coaching Defense Sparks Strong Reaction From College Football Fans
Before taking over as Colorado’s head coach, Coach Prime had already built an impressive coaching résumé at Jackson State, where he posted a 27-6 record across three seasons.
During an appearance on “The Basement with Tim Ross,” Sanders opened up about the criticism he believes he received from other college coaches after landing head coaching opportunities at both Jackson State and Colorado.
“They’re upset because they thought I skipped the line,” Sanders said. “They thought I hadn’t put in enough work to be where God had planted me. Let me explain. They think that they could be a graduate assistant and run around and do whatever coaches need them to do.”

Sanders then described the traditional route many coaches take, noting that they typically begin their careers as graduate assistants before working their way up the coaching ladder.
However, Sanders argued that those critics overlooked the extensive coaching experience he had accumulated long before reaching the college level.
“They didn’t get that. All the years of coaching on them, all American games. They didn’t get that,” Sanders added. “They just saw an expeditious elevation because I went from Jackson, now I’m here. ‘He don’t deserve that because we didn’t get it like that.’”

However, many college football fans were not convinced by Sanders’ explanation and pushed back against his argument on social media.
“What is his record at Colorado University?” one fan wrote.
“While every point was valid. Why coach at an institution that didn’t see your value initially? His experience playing alone qualified him to coach at any level. Sure, he didn’t owe his coaching career to JSU but he left just before turning his influence into something special,” a comment read.
“You did skip the line and then immediately abandoned the school that let you skip the line to be a head coach,” a user added.
“I love Prime, but these convos aren’t productive; justifying your coaching resume to people who don’t know [expletive] about ball is irrelevant,” another fan claimed.
“I believe they would question Peyton Manning ‘skipping the line.’ Why wouldn’t they? The fact of the matter is, elite professional athletes rarely become great coaches. More have failed than succeeded. I still love Coach Prime,” one fan noted.
When Sanders arrived at Colorado for his first season, he brought his son, Shedeur Sanders alongside Travis Hunter with him. Despite the excitement surrounding the program, the Buffaloes finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 4-8 record.
Colorado then responded with a significant improvement in 2024, finishing the season with a 9-4 record. However, the Buffaloes took a major step backward again in 2025, struggling to a 3-9 record. The departures of Shedeur and Hunter to the NFL created another major challenge for Sanders and his program.
Following the major disappointment of the 2025 season, Sanders and Colorado now enter the new season with significant pressure to improve. PFN projects Colorado with only a 0.8% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff in the 2026 season.
For now, both Coach Prime and his team understand that a much stronger performance will be necessary to change the narrative surrounding the Buffaloes.
