A week ago, we wrote a story detailing where each of the starters from Michigan’s National Championship team in 2023 is now playing. We thought it would be only fair to give the coaching staff from that team their own article. Without further ado, here is where each of the coaches from the 2023 Michigan staff are now.

HC Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers HC

As is well known, Harbaugh bolted for the NFL after winning it all at his alma mater. In his return to the NFL, Harbaugh has gone 11-6 in both his first two seasons in Los Angeles. Coincidentally, he has also lost in the AFC Wild Card round both seasons. He will look to get over the hump this fall.

OC Sherrone Moore, Uhhhhh

No need to get into this…we’ll skip right past this one!

QB Coach Kirk Campbell, Los Angeles Chargers Offensive Assistant

Campbell was promoted to offensive coordinator ahead of the 2024 season, and things did not go smoothly to say the least. After one season, he was let go and was hired again by Harbaugh to be an offensive assistant with the Chargers, where he remains today.

RB Coach Mike Hart, Boston College RB Coach

Hart remains a Michigan legend thanks to his playing days in Ann Arbor. Upon Harbaugh’s departure, Hart’s contract was not renewed. He went to Eastern Michigan (where he had coached before) to be an offensive analyst during the 2025 season. Earlier this spring, he accepted an offer to become Boston College’s running backs coach.

WR Coach Ron Bellamy, Michigan Director of Player Personnel

Bellamy was the wide receivers coach when Michigan won the National Championship. He remained on staff under Moore for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. When Kyle Whittingham took over, Bellamy was originally not retained as the wide receivers coach, but was later hired as the Director of Player Personnel.

TE Coach Grant Newsome, New York Giants Assistant OL Coach

Newsome was beloved by Harbaugh and was in the process of making his way up the coaching ranks following his career-ending knee injury while playing for the Wolverines. Following Harbaugh’s departure, Newsome was promoted to the offensive line coach. Following two seasons in that role, Whittingham did not retain Newsome’s services, leading to his hire by John Harbaugh, the new head coach of the New York Giants, as an assistant offensive line coach.

DC Jesse Minter, Baltimore Ravens HC

Minter actually received his first head coaching experience as an interim head coach during Harbaugh’s three game suspension in 2023. Following the National Championship, Minter followed Harbaugh back to the NFL to be the Los Angeles Changers’ defensive coordinator. He quickly turned them into one of the better units in the NFL, which allowed him the opportunity to be hired by the Ravens as their head coach.

DL Coach Mike Elston, Los Angeles Chargers DL Coach

Elston had bounced around the collegiate ranks before winding up at Michigan in 2022. Following the championship season, he followed Harbaugh to the Chargers, marking his first time as a coach in the NFL. Elston remains the defensive line coach for the Chargers and is entering his third year in that role.

LB Coach Chris Partridge, Seattle Seahawks Defensive Run Game Coordinator

Partridge was fired by the university in Nov. 2023, as he was accused of destroying evidence and telling players to lie to NCAA investigators during the Connor Stalions saga. However, he was eventually cleared of all wrongdoing by the NCAA and in March of 2026, he filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the university.

In the football world, Partridge was scooped up by former Michigan defensive coordinator and current Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. Partridge won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks and remains in Seattle as defensive run game coordinator.

Co-DC and DB Coach Steve Clinkscale, Los Angeles Chargers DB Coach

Clinkscale was widely regarded as one of the best recruiters on the staff during the Harbaugh era. He was hired in 2021 and was quickly promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2022. Following the 2023 season, he followed Harbaugh to Los Angeles, where he remains as the defensive backs coach.

ST Coach Jay Harbaugh, Seattle Seahawks ST Coordinator

The younger Harbaugh was hired by his dad at Michigan in 2015 and bounced around the program until the conclusion of the 2023 season. In his tenure with the Wolverines, Harbaugh coached the tight ends, running backs, special teams and safeties. At the time of the National Championship, his title was special teams coordinator and safeties coach. Following his father’s departure, he was hired by the Seattle Seahawks as special teams coordinator, where he remains today.

S&C Coach Ben Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers Executive Director of Player Performance

Herbert is hailed as a legend in Ann Arbor as well thanks to his role in the 2023 team’s success. He opted to follow Harbaugh to Los Angeles along with Elston, Minter and Clinkscale. He will enter his third season on the Charger’s coaching staff this fall.
