ESPN’s updated Football Power Index rankings were released on Thursday afternoon, serving as the first indication that the 2026 college football season is getting closer, especially for Texas A&M, which will kick off the 2026 campaign in just eight weeks on Saturday, Sept. 5. Entering his third season at the helm, coach Mike Elko has built a roster worthy of a preseason top 10 ranking.

Still, after a record 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, Elko’s offseason staff elevations, which included WR coach Holmon Wiggins becoming the new offensive coordinator/playcaller, were risky given the revamped roster, which is made up of 65% returning players from the 2025 roster, 17 transfer portal additions, and 26 freshmen from the 2026 recruiting class.

Trusting Elko’s judgment, Wiggins’ background as former Alabama coach Nick Saban’s assistant head coach, while serving as co-offensive coordinator for former OC Collin Klein, can’t be ignored, no matter how the national media frames Wiggins’ lack of playcalling experience.

In the latest ESPN FPI rankings, Texas A&M comes in at No. 11 and is the 5th highest-ranked SEC team. The Aggies enter the new campaign with an 8.4-3.8 win-loss projection and a 39.1% chance of making the College Football Playoff after reaching the tournament for the first time in program history last fall.

Loading up on defense, losing unanimous All-American edge Cashius Howell hurts, but gaining former Northwestern edge Anto Saka was critical, bringing in one of the most underrated pass rushers who is currently taking part in the annual Sack Summit this weekend. Under Elko and new DC Lyle Hemphill, defense isn’t expected to be an issue, placing the most pressure on starting quarterback Marcel Reed.

After his career year under center, Reed will be throwing to one of the best wide receiver rotations in the country, now including Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, while star junior Mario Craver will lead the room after reeling in 59 receptions, 917 yards, and 4 touchdowns last season. However, Reed will be working behind four new offensive line starters, which will make or break the Aggies’ chances of returning to the postseason.
