Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NCAA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Michigan fans and fans across the country.
Michigan’s on its bye week, but has a lot to clean up and evaluate — including if starting quarterback Bryce Underwood gives them the best chance to win.
Michigan has lost two games in a row and now sits at 3-2 on the season.
In Michigan’s 20-14 loss to Minnesota, Underwood struggled mightily, going 10-of-21 for 101 yards with two interceptions.
Underwood has thrown for five touchdowns and four interceptions this season while completing 59.3% of his passes. Underwood’s Total QBR of 56.6 ranks No. 70 in the nation and Michigan’s passing offense ranks No. 111 in passing offense.
If Michigan was to make a change at quarterback, the player likely to replace Underwood would be true freshman backup Tommy Carr. Carr’s only action this season came against UTEP, where he was 2-of-2 for 23 yards with a touchdown pass. Carr also fared well in Michigan’s spring game, going 21-of-30 for 143 yards with 59 rushing yards.
Next up for Michigan is a home tilt versus Penn State, and we want to know who you believe should start at Michigan then. Vote below.
Underwood has now started 18 games for Michigan — how many more are needed before clear and obvious improvements are seen? Perhaps Underwood has more time left as Michigan’s QB1, but his time will quickly be running out if Michigan continues to lose. Michigan’s next three games are against Penn State, Indiana and Rutgers. If Michigan was to name Carr the starter ahead of games versus PSU and IU, it would undoubtedly be a tall task and be perceived as throwing him into the fire. For that reason, Underwood may have more time to hold Carr off.
At 3-2 with more losses to likely come Michigan should start to think about the future and who could be their starter in 2027. If there’s any doubt about whether that’ll be Underwood, then that’s all the more reason to give Carr a look as QB1.
