SLIPPERY ROCK — Fort LeBoeuf and Hickory each relied on resiliency during the second half of their Nov. 7 District 10 Class 3A semifinal.
The Bison, who were inches away from a field goal and a fourth-and-goal touchdown in the second quarter, leaned into it throughout the third. Not only did they score and pull themselves within four points of the Hornets’ lead but limited them to three snaps from scrimmage during those same 12 minutes.
Hickory, though, responded with a dominant fourth quarter.
Kelvin Morrison, who has more than a dozen NCAA Division I football offers as a junior, intercepted LeBoeuf quarterback Dominic Walters deep in Hornets’ territory. The potential Penn State Nittany Lion returned the pick 85 yards for a touchdown with 5 minutes, 5 seconds left in regulation.
Morrison’s splash play left Hickory up 27-10 en route to its 34-17 victory at Slippery Rock University’s Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
“Kelvin is special to me,” coach Bill Dungee said, “because he’s a hard worker and the same kid I met when he was nine years old in midget football. He has all those Division I offers, but you wouldn’t even know it the way he acts.”
The Hornets will take a 10-1 record into next weekend’s district 3A final against Sharon. The Tigers defeated North East 49-21 in the other Nov. 7 semifinal at General McLane High School.
LeBoeuf concluded 2025 play at 8-4.
What could have been
The Bison went into halftime knowing they were inches away from at least a nine-point second quarter and a potential lead.
Kicker Lucas Kantz, who converted a 42-yard field for LeBoeuf’s first three points, had a 26-yarder glance off the flag of the left upright.
The Bison also were at Hickory’s one on the half’s final snap. Walters sought to reach the ball over its goal line, only to have the Hornets’ Jaxson Schneider punch it loose before it broke the plane.
LeBoeuf was left to lament its 14-3 deficit in its locker room.
“The boys were disappointed,” Bison coach Justin Blose said, “but they were disappointed in themselves. At that point, they felt the only one holding us back was ourselves.”
Walters wasn’t denied the end zone at the end of LeBoeuf’s six-plus minute possession that began the second half. His 15-yard run pulled the fourth-seeded Bison within 14-10.
However, they’d get no closer.
Hickory quarterback Christian Dungee called his own number for a 16-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth. Morrison followed with his interception return and then a five-yard scoring run that made it 34-10.
“Our guys, they made big plays when they had to,” Bill Dungee said.
Brady Black’s 50-yarder gave LeBoeuf a cosmetic touchdown with 33 seconds left.
“The guys were excited (for the game),” Blose said. “It was playoff football – a district semifinal – and they’re hungry to get back here.”
