Texas A&M football snap count leaders vs. Missouri State in Week 1

Texas A&M's 50-0 win over Missouri State gave the Aggies a chance to play several players in the second half, which skewed the snap counts in the season opener.

Week 2 against the Arizona State Sun Devils should provide a more realistic look at several position groups as the Aggies try to settle on the lineups they'll take into SEC play. Still, the Week 1 numbers provide our first look at which players emerged from spring practice and preseason camp with significant roles.

Head coach Mike Elko has also never been shy about playing whoever shows up when given an opportunity. Changes to NCAA eligibility rules provide even more flexibility to get younger players on the field without the same concerns surrounding the traditional four-game redshirt exception.

The most interesting numbers from Saturday night came along the offensive line when compared with Marcel Reed's workload. Ideally, a settled starting offensive line will closely mirror the starting quarterback's snap count. Outside of Mark Nabou Jr. and Tyree Adams, the coaching staff began rotating players as the game progressed while continuing to search for its best five.

As we go through the season, we'll revisit these numbers each week to track what changes and, more importantly, discuss why. Below are Texas A&M's Week 1 snap-count leaders, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

It's only Week 1, and Elko is still looking for his best five offensive linemen. With another week of game tape to review and a tougher opponent coming to Kyle Field in Week 2, we should get a better indication of which five ultimately receive the most playing time.

Another number to monitor is Owens' workload. His 49 snaps led the running backs, but freshmen KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker flashed when given opportunities, while Jamarion Morrow brought another element to the backfield. Owens appears to be the leader of the group coming out of camp, but the distribution behind him will be worth watching as the competition increases.

There isn't much to take away from the defensive totals this week. With the Aggies holding a commanding lead and turning to their depth, the numbers are more reflective of a 50-point blowout than a definitive look at Texas A&M's defensive hierarchy.

Mikhail's 23 snaps are worth monitoring while Daymion Sanford works his way back from injury. Mikhail looked solid in the opener and made the most of his opportunity, but linebacker will be another position to watch once Sanford returns.

Overall, this is a deep Texas A&M defense, and there should be plenty of rotation along the defensive line throughout the season. Snap counts in the back seven could vary considerably from week to week depending on the opponent, personnel packages and game plan.
