Urban Meyer Suggests Bryce Underwood Could Get Benched This Weekend

Perhaps no college football team in recent memory had as unconvincing of a win as Michigan did over Western Michigan last weekend. It was so bad that former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is starting to wonder if Wolverines QB Bryce Underwood is on borrowed time as a starter.

Appearing on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Meyer said that he expects Underwood to continue to get better as the season goes on. But he warned that if Underwood doesn’t play well in the first half of tomorrow’s game against Oklahoma, the team might give freshman QB Tommy Carr some reps.

“I expect Bryce Underwood to get better and better and better. However, if this thing does not go well in the first half you might see the Freshman quarterback, Carr, come in there,” Meyer said.

Bryce on Borrowed Time?

It was certainly an underwhelming performance by Underwood at home against the Broncos last weekend. Prior to his 47-yard touchdown pass to win the game after the referees put one more second on the clock, he had completed just 11 passes for 123 yards and had an interception.

As for Carr, Michigan fans are pretty excited about him. On top of being a four-star QB prospect, he’s the grandson of legendary Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, the son of former Michigan backup Jason Carr and the younger brother of Notre Dame QB CJ Carr. Michigan football and quarterbacking are quite literally in his blood.

This week’s opponent, the Oklahoma Sooners, are expected to present significantly more problems for the Wolverines on both sides of the ball. The Sooners dominated UTEP last week, looking like a well-oiled machine in a 51-0 win.

Michigan will enter Saturday’s game as a rare home underdog, with the Sooners favored by five.
