Texas Longhorns Star Colin Simmons had Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon in trouble on third down, and the defender finished the play with a sack. What happened next quickly changed the result.
Simmons dropped Brandon for a 16-yard loss late in the second quarter. He then appeared to pretend to urinate on the field during his celebration, prompting officials to flag him for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Colin Simmons Turns a Big Sack Into a Costly Penalty
The situation made the penalty especially costly. Tennessee faced third-and-13 from its own 28 when Simmons reached Brandon and brought him down at the 12.
The sack should have forced Tennessee into fourth-and-29. Instead, the 15-yard penalty against Simmons gave the Volunteers a first down at the 27 and allowed the drive to continue.
The referee’s announcement made the moment even more unusual. Simmons was penalized for “simulating using the restroom,” according to the on-field call.

Video of the celebration quickly spread online. The referee’s unusual explanation drew almost as much attention as the sack itself.
The call also fits the NCAA’s updated approach to celebrations in 2026. The rules committee said officials would focus on celebrations considered demeaning to the game or an opponent, as well as taunting and actions that interfere with game administration.
That means the penalty was not simply the result of Simmons celebrating too much. The specific gesture was among the actions officials had been instructed to watch for this season.
The Mistake Stands Out Because Texas Star Is So Important
Simmons entered the game as one of Texas’ most important defenders. The junior edge rusher led the SEC with 12 sacks in 2025 and had already recorded four sacks in 2026 before the Tennessee matchup.
He had also recorded at least one sack in each of Texas’ first three games before arriving at Neyland Stadium. That consistency shows why he has become such a key part of the Longhorns’ defense.
The celebration made the play costly despite another strong pass rush from Simmons. A defender who had just made a big third-down stop gave Tennessee a new set of downs before the Texas defense could leave the field.
The sack will still appear in Simmons’ box score. The penalty will remain part of the play as well.
The moment may become one of the strangest highlights from the Texas-Tennessee game. The football lesson is much simpler. Simmons nearly made the perfect play before his celebration turned a third-down stop into another Tennessee possession.
