It's the dawn of a new era as the Northwestern Wildcats open up their new stadium against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The new Ryan Field hosts its first game on the centennial of the old Ryan Field's first game.

The Wildcats (2-1, 0-1 Big Ten) are coming off a 29-23 loss at the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers. Most books have them as a -2.5 home underdog.

Head coach David Braun noted that the team had practiced Sunday at the new stadium, pumping in crowd noise to simulate the sound-retaining features of Ryan Field's continuous canopy.

The Wildcats committed three false start penalties Friday, posting a scoreless half before roaring back in the second half.

Quarterback Aidan Chiles finished 22-for-29 for 293 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Luke Dehnicke broke out in a big way, with seven catches for 140 yards. Dehnicke is listed as unavailable for tonight's conference match.

Penn State (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) fell from the AP Top 25 after an upset loss at Beaver Stadium to Wisconsin, 24-20.

Iowa State transfer quarterback Rocco Becht finished 12-for29 for 114 yards and one interception. Running back James Peoples rushed for 67 yards on 14 carries. Chase Sowell caught six passes for 70 yards.

The new Ryan Field cost roughly $875 million and was privately funded. It is the most expensive stadium in college football. Designs for the new-look stadium first were announced in 2022. The Ryan family led a ribbon cutting outside the east end zone on Friday afternoon.
