USC Trojans beat the Washington Huskies 25-21 in an impressive comeback win after a tough loss to Oregon.
A big test for Lincoln Riley
In the third quarter, the Trojans trailed 21-10, with their backs against the wall and their College Football Playoff hopes dashed.
As the team looked on the verge of another disappointing loss, the Trojans’ student section chanted “Fire Riley.”
However, the team pulled off a strong comeback, showing some good resilience.
USC’s comeback win
USC had a back-breaking, unsportsmanlike conduct at the start of the second half that cost the team the ability to score. Washington followed that with a 42-yard touchdown after a much-maligned defense missed multiple tackles.
However, USC managed to turn things around, scoring 15 straight points. Tanook Hines had a clutch touchdown catch, and then Jahkeem Stewart returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Washington had the ball at USC’s 12-yard line late in the game, but the defense stepped up and got a key stop to seal the win for head coach Lincoln Riley.
USC finished with nine penalties for 94 yards and an interception, and while they won despite it all, tension remains around the program as Riley tries to secure a signature win.
For Riley, however, he was impressed by how the team played.
“I felt like for a long period of the game, we were really outplaying them,” Riley said.
“But when you make some of those mistakes, and you just let them keep hanging around … with penalty after penalty, we’ve clearly got to do a way better job on that.
“A lot to clean up, (but) a lot to be excited about. We had to dig deep for this one. There’s no question, especially with as sloppy as we played, especially offensively.”
USC heads to Penn State for a tough road game that will continue the tests for Riley and this Trojans squad.
