Looking back into history, Vanderbilt’s historic upset of No. 1 Alabama in October 2024 came with a hefty price tag. It was bound to happen after fans ripped down the goalposts, dumped them into the Cumberland River, and left the university with a $100,000 fine payable to Alabama. But the SEC later decided to make those celebrations even more expensive.

In May 2025, commissioner Greg Sankey introduced a flat $500,000 fine for schools whose fans storm the field or court, meaning a similar celebration could now cost five times as much. And so, on Saturday night in Lexington, Kentucky risked facing that same penalty.

The Wildcats stunned No. 10 LSU 35-34 in overtime, sending thousands of fans onto the field. And the Tigers’ head coach, Lane Kiffin, found himself caught in the chaos, trying to reach the locker room while some Kentucky supporters flipped him off. Security personnel worked to clear a path through the crowd as fans surrounded the LSU head coach.

“Lane Kiffin exits as Kentucky fans storm the field after stunning LSU,” On3 posted on X on October 11.

When college football tensions boil over, the drama extends far beyond the field. Subscribe to stay across the heated moments that define rivalry season.

Here’s what happened: Kentucky entered as a 9.5-point underdog at Kroger Field, but LSU couldn’t finish the job. Sam Leavitt gave the Tigers a 34-27 overtime lead with a 15-yard touchdown run, only for C.J. Baxter to answer with a 1-yard score. Rather than settle for another extra point, Kentucky coach Will Stein went for two, and quarterback Kenny Minchey ran it in to complete the upset.

The Tigers had already blown an opportunity to close out the game in regulation. Leading 27-24 after wide receiver Jackson Harris threw a 41-yard trick-play touchdown pass to Roman Mothershed, LSU allowed Kentucky to march 67 yards in 1 minute and 25 seconds. Adam Zouagui then drilled a 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Leavitt completed 25 of 34 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns, but LSU’s offense struggled to establish a running game. The Tigers finished with 410 total yards, including 316 through the air, while managing just 94 rushing yards on 36 attempts. But once the game was done, fans made their way to the field.

“THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF KENTUCKY FANS ARE STORMING THE FIELD AFTER THE WILDCATS PULLED OFF A MIRACULOUS 35-34 OVERTIME UPSET OVER LSU. WILL STEIN. WHAT A NIGHT. WHAT A MOMENT,” MLFootball posted.

And those celebrations could prove costly. Before the SEC revised its policy, field-storming penalties increased from $100,000 for a first offense to $250,000 and eventually $500,000 for repeat violations. Sankey eliminated that progression, arguing that the safety risk doesn’t change based on how many times a school has committed the offense.

“The motivation was ‘field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time,’” Sankey said in 2025.

There is an exception, however. Schools can avoid the penalty if the visiting team and officiating crew safely exit before spectators rush the field, without any interaction between fans and opposing personnel. Whether Kentucky qualifies for that exemption remains unclear.

Lane Kiffin previously expressed concerns about such situations

“The fan storming thing is a little tough,” he said in May 2025. “They don’t do it in the NFL. I get it. It’s pretty cool, but then it can be aggravating because they’re storming and you’re worried about them hitting you, what’s going on, what are they gonna do?”

The hostile send-off also followed a week of pregame drama. A fabricated quote attributed to Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey reportedly circulated inside LSU’s football facility: “LSU’s defense hasn’t seen anyone like us and our offensive line yet.”

Kentucky Sports Radio reported that Minchey never made the statement and that it was manufactured for the Tigers. However, who displayed the graphic remains unconfirmed.

Despite the buildup, Kiffin had praised Kentucky coach Will Stein ahead of the matchup.

“I think he’s brought that youthful, confident energy in there,” he said.

Stein’s first season had already featured road victories over Texas A&M and South Carolina, and the LSU upset gave him another statement win.

For Kiffin, the defeat exposed problems beyond the final score. LSU surrendered a 55-yard punt return touchdown to Brock Coffman in the second quarter after its coverage unit failed to bring him down. The Tigers also committed seven penalties for 50 yards, while Kentucky was flagged just twice for 20 yards.

Kiffin acknowledged that his team’s mistakes ultimately made the difference.

“So if you don’t do fundamentally sound stuff, you get exposed versus good teams,” he said after the loss.

LSU now sits at 4-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC play, with both defeats coming away from home. Kiffin’s other loss came against Ole Miss, leaving him 0-2 in true road games during his first season in Baton Rouge. The Tigers have also lost eight consecutive SEC road games, with their last conference victory away from home coming against Arkansas on October 19, 2024.

Kentucky, meanwhile, improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Wildcats have now secured consecutive 35-34 overtime victories, following their win over South Carolina.

With six SEC games remaining, Kiffin has little room for another setback. LSU returns home to face No. 17 Mississippi State next Saturday, while Kentucky travels to Oklahoma looking to build on its momentum.

As for the potential $500,000 penalty, the SEC has yet to confirm whether Kentucky will be fined. But the Wildcats’ celebrations have already drawn attention for reasons beyond the upset itself. What should have been a routine walk to the locker room became another reminder of the safety concerns surrounding field-storming, with Kiffin caught in the middle.
