Baldwyn player dismissed from team following arrest

One of Baldwyn’s best defensive players has been dismissed from the football team following a felony arrest.

Braxton Stewart, 19, was charged last week with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was arrested by the Baldwyn Police Department and booked into the Lee County-Tupelo Adult Jail on Monday, Aug. 17. Stewart bonded out of jail the next day.

According to Baldwyn Police, Stewart was involved in an altercation with a group of juveniles, with the incident beginning on Second Street. Stewart was arrested on Cemetery Street after he allegedly struck one of the juveniles with a handgun. No shots were fired.

Stewart’s case will be presented to a grand jury.

A 6-foot, 205-pound senior defensive lineman, Stewart was one of the Bearcats’ most productive players last season. He recorded 59 tackles, was second on the team in both sacks (eight) and tackles-for-loss (14), and had a team-leading 13 quarterback hurries.

As a sophomore, Stewart played a big role in Baldwyn’s run to the Class 1A state championship. He made 84 tackles, three sacks, 18 tackles-for-loss and five fumble recoveries.

Stewart is the second big loss for the Bearcats, who saw cornerback and wide receiver Ashton Grice transfer to Tupelo Christian over the summer.

Baldwyn opens the 2026 season on Thursday at home versus Kossuth.
