The Michigan Wolverines are now 3-2 this season and desperately need to get back on track. Michigan has lost consecutive games to Iowa and Minnesota and now will have another matchup that could go either way next Saturday against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Per FanDuel Sportsbook, Michigan is a 5.5-point favorite over Penn State, with the over/under set at 42.5 points.

While Michigan has had a poor start to the season, it’s been even worse for 3-3 Penn State. PSU won their first three games versus inferior non-conference opponents in Marshall, Temple, and Buffalo but have lost all three of their Big Ten tilts (Wisconsin, Northwestern, USC).

Penn State’s new head coach Matt Campbell was hired this offseason after spending 2016-25 as Iowa State’s head coach, where he had a 72-55 overall record while going 50-40 in the Big 12. It has not been a smooth transition for Campbell, whereas it has been at UCLA this season under Bob Chesney and at Indiana during Curt Cignetti’s first year on the job in 2024. If Penn State loses to Michigan, fans may already have lost patience in the very fresh Campbell era of Penn State football.

Michigan being a favorite in this isn’t entirely surprising, as they are the home team and Penn State has not looked fundamentally better than Michigan. The strength of both teams resides on defense, so this could be a low-scoring game where each team has at least one or two turnovers.

Do you think Michigan will cover the spread against Penn State? Will they win the game? Could it be a higher-scoring affair than it seems? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
