On Saturday evening, theClemson football program kicked off its 2026 season with an ugly 51-10 loss on the road against Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers. While Clemson got off to a hot start, recording an interception on the first play of the game, virtually nothing else went right for the Tigers throughout the rest of the evening.
After the game, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney kept it 100 percent real on his team’s shortcomings in the contest, including whether or not he thinks roster construction played into the loss.
“No, it’s football. We didn’t do football stuff well enough … I’m not gonna sit around and judge other people and what their resources are or what they can do,” he said, per Grayson Mann of TigerNet.com on X, formerly Twitter.

Swinney had previously criticized the LSU program for bringing former players onto their roster in a move that stirred up the college football landscape.
Meanwhile, the Clemson football program has been on a steady downward trajectory over the last several years, now a far cry from the championship heights that the team reached with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence during the late 2010s.
Swinney has grown increasingly defensive in his interviews over the last couple of seasons as the Tigers’ struggles have mounted, and Saturday’s contest certainly didn’t set a great tone for the rest of the season, as Clemson lost to LSU to open up the year for a second straight campaign.
In any case, the Tigers will look to bounce back when they next hit the field on Saturday for a home game against Georgia Southern.
