Clemson Tigers HC Dabo Swinney Makes Jarring QB Comments

The Clemson Tigers are widely expected to start Christopher Vizzina at quarterback to begin the season, but head coach Dabo Swinney recently made some comments that will make you think otherwise.

Or, at the very least, they will make you think that Clemson's starting quarterback job is still largely up for grabs.

The Tigers are slated to open fall camp this Thursday, and while discussing the Tigers' quarterback situation prior to the beginning of camp, Swinney outright said that freshman Tait Reynolds could win the position.

“We may go into the season, and CV may clearly separate in fall camp. Or maybe Tait wins it. (The competition) may be close. Who knows? I don’t have a crystal ball,” Swinney said. “All I know is I've got good players that we believe in and we've got a bunch of playmakers that are going to make plays no matter who throws it to them.”

Vizzina is now entering his redshirt junior campaign. He spent his first three years sitting behind Cade Klubnik, but now, he will get his opportunity to start.

Or so we think.

Vizzina made one start in 2025, going 29-for-42 with 317 yards and three touchdowns during a loss to SMU. Over the course of his entire Clemson tenure, he has gone 64-for-105 with 596 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.

A former four-star recruit, Vizzina was hyped pretty significantly when he initially joined the Tigers, but there is no question that buzz has disappointed.

Then there's Reynolds, Clemson's three-star freshman who almost immediately surpassed Chris Denson on the depth chart in spring ball.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound signal-caller instantly caught Swinney's attention and how appears to be a legitimate threat to usurp Vizzina at some point in 2026.

Vizzina is still the favorite to open the regular season under center. But if he gets off to a rough start, Swinney would almost surely waste little time going to Reynolds.

The Tigers will begin the year against LSU for the second straight season, but this time, the matchup will be in Baton Rouge on Sept. 5.

We'll see if Clemson can avenge its 2025 loss … and we'll see which quarterback is actually leading the team.
