Colorado football is nearing the end of its spring session with the official spring game set for Saturday in front of fans. There has been significant turnover on this roster compared to a season ago, with more than 40 new faces arriving, while over 35 players have left Boulder and Sanders’ program. With those departures, a few former CU players have taken subtle shots at Colorado and Deion Sanders himself.
Former Buffs quarterback Ryan Staub, now at Tennessee, said this in late March about the difference between Knoxville and Boulder.
“In my three years of playing college football, I haven’t had as much coaching as I’ve had in the first month that I’ve been here,” Staub told reporters earlier this offseason. “It’s a lot of special coaching. I haven’t been coached this much. I’m just trying to learn as much as I can and improve.”
Former five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, now at LSU, also took some shots while discussing his decision to leave Colorado.
“When I left Colorado, I felt like I was at a good point, but coming here, the transition from how I eat to how we work out here is just kind of different….My decision to come here was based off it just means more,” Seaton said. “We’re big on extra around here. Just doing what’s required is not enough.”
At Tuesday’s press conference, Deion Sanders addressed the comments from former players and made it clear where he stands.
“Some of our past players have been commenting on us, which is cool with me,” Sanders said. “We’re not going to be provoked or comment back or say anything ignorant back. I wish those guys the best. One thing that I can comfortably say: Some people came here that you didn’t know of, and when you left, they had a name. I’m proud of that. I’m proud that they were able to earn more than they earned here, which can help their friends, family and loved ones.”

“But you’ve got to understand, some young men play the victim,” Sanders continued. “That’s not the case. We try to treat everybody here with the utmost respect and professionalism. I hope we’ve done just that, as well as treating you [the media] in the same way. But we will not engage in back and forth with any former players. Our aim is to really please, support, encourage, motivate and really prepare our men that we have on campus for the next phases of their life.”
Sanders handled the situation with respect, wishing his former players the best at their new programs while making it clear Colorado will not engage publicly. The focus remains on the players currently in the building.
