ACC Program Gives Head Coach New Contract After 11-Win Season

The college football season is still months away, but one program is investing in its head coach after a successful season.

On Wednesday, the Virginia Cavaliers announced that they are giving head coach Tony Elliott after an 11-win season in 2025.

Virginia posted double-digit wins for the first time since 1989, and the 11 victories are the most in a single season in program history.

Virginia finished the season ranked at No. 19, and the Cavaliers defeated the Missouri Tigers in the Gator Bowl to cap off the magical season.

Elliott finished his fourth season at Virginia, and he went just 11-23 in the first three seasons combined before figuring things out in 2025.

Director of Athletics Carla Williams made the announcement on Wednesday.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Tony Elliott continue to lead our football program,” Williams said. β€œHis commitment to the values of the University of Virginia and his commitment to developing the whole person through football have been a blessing. His vision of building the model program has never wavered, despite extraordinary adversity. The future is bright for UVA Football and we’re excited to continue this work together.”

Once Bronco Mendenhall resigned after the 2021 season, Virginia decided to hire Elliott as the new head coach.

The former Clemson wide receiver spent time as an assistant at South Carolina State and Furman before spending a decade working on Dabo Swinney's staff at Clemson.

So, Elliott took the job, stayed in the ACC, and even though the first three seasons were rough, the 2025 campaign was a positive step in the right direction.

"The commitment to football at the University of Virginia is real and palpable throughout our building. I’m proud of the foundation that we have laid and excited for what we can do together in the years to come," Elliott said, via the official release from the program.

So, coming off the program's best year in its history, Virginia has decided to keep Elliott in town at least through the rest of the decade.
