Florida's Jon Sumrall Reacts to Playing Team That Blew Him Out Twice in 2025

Jon Sumrall suffered three losses in 2025, with two of them coming to Florida's opponent in Week 4. 

The Tulane Green Wave were dominated 45-10 at Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium last September. The Green Wave didn't have the talent to matchup with the Rebels, and that showed in their College Football Playoff matchup that saw Ole Miss win 41-10 with Pete Golding earning his first victory as a head coach.

Sumrall has Florida ranked No. 21 and a favorite to defeat the Rebels at home on Saturday. On Monday, Sumrall was asked how this Ole Miss team compares to the one he had issues against with Tulane last year.

I"t’s no different than last week’s ball game," Sumrall said, via hottytoddy.com "Last week wasn’t Florida versus South Florida or any of that. This isn’t one thing versus another. Pete and I go way back. I coached against Pete when I was an assistant at Tulane and he was an assistant at Southeastern Louisiana.

"There’s no, 'They got us last year, so we have to get them this year.' I guess they got Florida last year, too. This is a totally different deal. Every week is new teams. Half our roster wasn’t here, and half their roster wasn’t there. There’s so much non-carryover."

While much of the squads and coaching staffs are different this year, Ole Miss does have one key piece that is the same as last year. Sumrall noted that Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambloss is a threat for Saturday's game.

"The one thing I do have is that I’ve watched their quarterback play out of his mind enough to have a lot of respect for him," Sumrall said of Chambliss. "He’s as good a college football player as I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes."

How Florida's defense does against Chambliss will be the story of Saturday's matchup.

Gators quarterback Aaron Philo has proven to be a solid starter through three games this season. Running back Jadan Baugh is dangerous.

The Gators did struggle against Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown in Week 3. Chambliss can do even more damage if Florida doesn't contain him.
