After an offseason filled with significant changes in Ann Arbor, the No. 16 Michigan Wolverines finally get their first opportunity to show what the program will look like under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. Michigan enters 2026 with plenty of familiar faces on the roster, but new coordinators, new schemes and renewed expectations following last season’s 9-4 finish.
Much of that attention will naturally fall on sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood. After an up-and-down freshman campaign, Underwood enters Year 2 as a team captain and has earned considerable praise from the coaching staff for the strides he made this offseason.
On the opposite side, Western Michigan isn’t your typical Week 1 MAC opponent. The Broncos enter the season as the defending MAC champions after winning 10 games in 2025, and their identity begins with an experienced rushing attack.
Quarterback Broc Lowry, the reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year, returns alongside running back Jalen Buckley after WMU ranked 16th nationally in rushing offense last season. Michigan is 7-0 all-time against the Broncos, but this should provide Whittingham and his staff with a legitimate early test.

Today’s question: What does Year 2 of Bryce Underwood look like?
There are plenty of new things to watch out for on Saturday night, but nothing will be more important to Michigan’s ceiling this season than the tangible development of Underwood.
The former No. 1 overall recruit flashed the immense talent that made him one of the most anticipated quarterbacks in program history as a freshman, but consistency remained an issue. He finished his first season with 11 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions while Michigan leaned heavily on its running game.
Now, after a full offseason of development, the Wolverines are expecting considerably more from their sophomore quarterback.
Early indications from the new staff have been encouraging, but Saturday night provides the first opportunity to see whether all that work translates when the lights come on. WMU had one of the better defenses in the country last season, ranking 17th nationally in total defense and fifth in sacks, although the Broncos must replace significant production in their front seven.
With Jordan Marshall and Savion Hitter in the backfield, as well as a revamped receiving corps, Underwood won’t be asked to carry the offense by himself. But if Michigan is going to navigate a schedule that gets much more difficult beginning next week against Oklahoma, it needs its QB1 to take a significant step forward on Saturday night.
