A Georgia Tech player launched a 65-yard bomb that tied for the 26th-longest punt in school history. This huge kick happened during the Yellow Jackets’ 44-11 win, according to the team’s official report. The ball was originally ruled down at the one-yard line. Replay later showed it had crossed the goal line for a touchback. That single play flipped a field position battle into a historic moment for the program.
A Rare Shot of Distance
Alex Bacchetta is the name behind that massive boot. He averaged 51.2 yards on four punts during the game. This performance marks the 31st time in Georgia Tech history a punter averaged at least 50 yards in a game. If he had sufficient attempts to qualify, his 44.1-yard season average would place him among the top 20 nationally. The stats show he is a threat every time he steps on the field. Four of his 10 kicks this year have traveled 50-plus yards. A total of just 8 yards resulted from only four returns. That is a 2.0 average return, which means the other team rarely gets good field position.
The team is now looking ahead to a tough test on the road. Georgia Tech opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at Stanford on Saturday. According to the team schedule, the game will air nationally on ESPN with a 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff. This is their first-ever regular-season game at Stanford. The Yellow Jackets are 1-2 so far, while Stanford is also 1-2. The opening line has Georgia Tech as a 4.5-point favorite, according to reports.com. The defense needs to step up, as Georgia Tech is currently 0-3 against the spread this season.
Renovations and Future Seats
The excitement on the field is matched by big changes in the stands. The 113-year-old home of Tech football is getting a major overhaul. Renovation work will begin immediately after the 2026 home schedule ends. It must be done in time for the 2027 season. This reseating process is the first for Georgia Tech football in 24 years. The last major renovation happened back in 2003. To retain their spots, fans must secure 2027 season tickets by Dec. 31, 2026. The base price to lock in a seat is $250 per ticket. Payments can be spread over four installments starting the day of commitment.
Supporters can also boost their priority points by making extra contributions now. An optional advancement on the TECH Fund contribution allows fans to spread payments over four months. This helps them get better seats when selection begins in February 2027. The Full Steam Ahead initiative is a $500 million fundraising drive to achieve championship goals. It will fund new projects for the football stadium, basketball center, and volleyball gym. The program aims to compete at the highest level in the next era of college sports through these upgrades.
What Comes Next for the Jackets
The team returns home on Saturday, Oct. 10 to face longtime rival Duke for Reck Day. This game celebrates the 65th anniversary of the Ramblin’ Reck. Monday, Sept. 28 will reveal the kickoff time. Single-game tickets start as low as $30 for these upcoming home games. Buying tickets individually costs more than the ACC Pick-3 Mini Plan, which provides 15% savings.
