Georgia vs Mississippi State Prediction, Preview, and Betting Lines

Georgia is settled in.

It’s No. 5 in the first round of College Football Playoff rankings, and it’s in the CFP with a home game if it wins out. If it wins this and beats Texas, it’s in the SEC Championship if Alabama loses another conference game.

But Mississippi State is good enough to pull this off.

The Starkville Bulldogs finally got an SEC win for the first time in, seemingly, forever, hanging on to beat Arkansas. At 5-4, it needs just one more win to go to a bowl, but it gets Missouri and Ole Miss after this.

Why Georgia Will Win

Mississippi State can’t stop a pass rush.

Georgia doesn’t bring a ton of heat, and the overall numbers aren’t great, but the pressure is there when timed right. No matter who the quarterback is – but especially if Blake Shapen isn’t 100% – Georgia can’t allow him to get comfortable.

Mississippi State is hitting more big shots down the field. The yards after the catch are good, but this isn’t the dink-and-dunk attack of last year.

There’s a ground game, but everything works best when Shapen is able to push it a bit. MSU averages over eight yards per pass attempt, but Georgia has only allowed more than 7.5 once, and that was to Tennessee. However …

Why Mississippi State Will Win

That was being nice about Georgia.

The overall defense is effective, but there’s no pass rush, no tackles for loss, and the teams with the high-powered offenses, like Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Alabama, didn’t have a ton of problems.

Partly because of that lack of pressure, there aren’t a ton of takeaways.

The defense has only forced multiple turnovers twice, and Mississippi State, for the most part, is careful with the ball.

The margin for error with this bunch is slim – it’s 0-3 when turning it over more than once, and 5-1, with the lone loss in overtime to Texas, when it doesn’t. And then there’s the …

Home field cooking.

Mississippi State beat Arizona State at home in a thriller, and the two losses to Tennessee and Texas both went to overtime. The offense worked great in both games.

The visiting Bulldogs will get all they can handle.

Mississippi State will keep the offense moving early on the way to a lead, dozens of YouTubeTV types will pay the ransom and download the ESPN app, and then …

Georgia will do what it does and wake up from its nap in time to kick it all in to pull out a terrific game.
