Week 9 Review
Hillsdale wasn’t the only team to have seniors close out their careers in Week 9, and not every team was able to have a celebration like the Hornets.
Waldron 56, Stryker 22
The Waldron Spartans might not be playoff bound, but their 6-3 season saw the team earn its fifth where the offense scored more than 50 points.
The Spartans fell just short of playoff eligbility and are one of at least four teams to not make the 16-team field for Division 2 that have a winning record.
“I am awfully proud of Team 72,” coach Anthony Roney said. “Consistent improvement was seen throughout the season. Our seniors represented the program well and leave it in a better place than they found it.”
That senior class include four-year starters like quarterback Seth Williams and running back Troy Shamplo. It also included seniors like Aiden Boyd, Collin Williams and Carmen Curtz.
Shamplo ended his career earning 221 rushing yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns. Williams had three carries for 34 yards and a touchdown. Boyd had one rushing touchdown.
Williams completed 10-of-13 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Even Shamplo got in on the passing action, completing three passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Eearning receiving touchdowns was Kurtz (five catches for 70 yards), Shamplo (four for 51), Eli Winchell (two for 44) and Williams (two for 26).
Isaac Fether had 14 total tackles, including two for a loss. Winchell had 12 tackles, two for a loss and a forced fumble. Kurtz and Shamplo each had eight solo tackles, two for losses. Shamplo had two fumble recoveries and one return touchdown. Jayden Justice had four tackles and an interception.
The Hillsdale Daily News sends out special props to Collin Williams, who was out this season with an injury but has been a staple all-area dream team honoree throughout his career.
Colon 71, North Adams-Jerome 20
The road trip to Colon was the final game for seniors like James Johnson, Conner Arsenault, Kaleb Hale, Nathan Todd and Jeremiah Gadelkarim. The Rams faced a Magi team looking to sneak into the postseason. Playoff points will kept Colon out of the postseason field for 8-player Division 1.
The Rams finish their 2025 campaign under new coach Kody Hodshire at 2-7, earning wins over St. Phillip and Tekonsha.
“The opportunity to come back and coach at my alma mater has been nothing short of a blessing. I had the time of my life this year. I am so proud of each and everyone of my players for the growth they showed this season. It resulted in one of the best seasons our school has had in a few years, but we cannot become complacent with our growth. We must continue to work in the off season, and come back next season ready to get better every day again, ” Kody Hodshire said.
Senior quarterback Conner Arsenault completed 11 passes for 214 yards, three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Sophomore lead target Desman Lawless had six catches, 118 yards, three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Elzie Weage, sophomore, had two catches for 36 yards. Ryker Campbell had two catches for 49 yards. Senior Nathan Todd hauled in two receptions for 11 yards.
Defensively, senior James Johnson had six solo tackles, two for a loss. Senior Jeremiah Gadelkarim had a tackle. Todd had one tackle. Arsenault had one tackle. Senior captain Kaleb Hale was ruled out of the game with an injury.
Britton Deerfield 63, Camden-Frontier 14
It wasn’t the night seniors Luis Castro-Thilo, ty Calaway, Dylan Drake, Brayden Bever, Clayton Rodgers and Weston Word wanted to leave out on, but the RedHawks seniors can hold their heads up after helping set up a strong foundation for success under new coach Kevin Slusher. The RedHawks finish the season with a 4-5 record.
This included wins over Litchfield, Tekonsha, Burr Oak and North Adams-Jerome.
Litchfield 36, Morenci 14
Litchfield, under coach Michael Langhann, earned three straight wins by double digits at the end of the season to afford their seniros an opportunity at breaking through to a winning record. That chance came up short in their season finale trip to Morenci.
They end 2025 with a 4-5 record with wins over St. Phillip, North Adams-Jerome, Burr Oak and Tekonsha.
“Our seniors—we’ve got three starters that we’re losing, four starters now that we’re losing—and yeah, they left an impact,” coach Langhann said. “These are the first guys that I started coaching when I got here and they came a long ways from being freshmen. I’m real proud of their growth and it really showed out this year.”
These seniors included Eli Wilson, Ben Baker, Hayden Thacker and Brady Kerr.
Connor Kerr had 119 passign yards and one touchdown in the game. Sophomore Gavin Gutting hauled in nine receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Watson led the team with 51 rushing yards on 10 carries. Baker had 50 rushing yards. Gutting ran in a touchdown.
Gutting broke the school record for single-game tackles with 21 1/2, also earning his eighth interception this season. Brayden Bradley and Baker each had 13 tackles.
Centreville 40, Reading 14
A few injuries and a tough conference schedule took its toll on the Readign Rangers follow-up campaign to their 2024 district title run. The Rangers ended their season in a loss to Centreville, concluding with a 3-6 record. They defeated Maple Valley, Quincy and Sand Creek.
Senior Markis Tucker had 18 carries, 90 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his final game for the Rangers. Senior Brayden Wright had two interceptions and carried the ball 11 times for 73 yards.
Landon Rose had nine tackles, Gavin Wright with eight, Cameron Wheeler with six and Connor Trott with six.
It was the end of the careers for seniors Tucker, Wright, Keven Denison, Gaven McKibbin, Wheeler, Dayton Verity, Tank Hudson and Cayleb Wright.
“We want to thank our seniors for the past 4 years and their contributions to the Rangers football program,” coach Rick Bailey said. “The future is bright in Reading with many juniors and sophomores playing significant roles this year due to our injuries and the freshmen had a very good year on the junior varsity team.”
