LSU coaches watching Texas Five-Star Plus+ WR commit Easton Royal as flip talks persist

Easton Royal

The recruitment of New Orleans Brother Martin Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Easton Royal remains red-hot. Despite being committed to Texas since last November, Royal has kept his options open and he’s been on the road this fall.

From the jump, LSU has been doing all it can to flip Royal and keep him in The Boot. That’s been the case since it hired Lane Kiffin the day after the pass-catcher committed to the Longhorns. The in-state program still has its foot on the gas.

Tigers receivers coach George McDonald and Ed Orgeron are in attendance for Royal and Brother Martin’s massive showdown vs. Edna Karr on Friday night:

LSU is still the program trending to flip Royal, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine. He’s returned to Baton Rouge this fall and continues to say all the right things about the local SEC program. It’s another SEC program that’s surging, though.

Florida has also managed to hang around in Royal’s recruitment. While LSU long looked like the school positioned best to flip the nation’s No. 5 overall prospect, the Gators just had him in Gainesville for a visit, and on Friday, he told Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman that he’ll return to The Swamp next weekend.

“I’m very close to a decision,” Royal told Rivals. “Since I’ve been to every school — every game day, every experience, every coaching staff — I’m very close to a decision. Maybe an announcement could be coming anytime soon.”

LSU has been on the wrong end of some notable flips across the last few cycles, but Kiffin and Co. would love to pull off what would be the biggest flip of the 2027 cycle. The Tigers have commitments from four-star athlete Braylon Calais, four-star WR Cade Cooper and four-star WR Ah’Mari Stevens, but the addition of Royal would take things to an elite level.

As of Oct. 2, LSU has the No. 10 class in the nation, according to the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Texas checks in at No. 6 with Royal still at the top of the pledge list. He’s one of two five-stars in Steve Sarkisian’s haul. Royal has been hinting at a final decision for a while, and as the December signing period approaches, more and more eyes are honing in on the pivotal recruitment.

Update: Texas receivers coach Chris Jackson is also in Louisiana getting another look at Royal on Friday night:
