Ed Orgeron is returning to LSU football. Per a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, LSU and Orgeron finalized a deal for Orgeron to have a place on Lane Kiffin’s LSU staff.

Orgeron was LSU’s head coach from 2016-2021, and led the Tigers to a 15-0 season and national championship in 2019.

The Louisiana native is familiar with Kiffin, and when Kiffin was originally hired in Baton Rouge, there was speculation about Orgeron returning. Now, it’s official.

Orgeron and Kiffin have worked together at multiple stops, including Tennessee and USC. When USC fired Kiffin in 2013, it was Orgeron who stepped in as the Trojans’ interim head coach.

Orgeron has expressed a desire to get back in the game over the last year. He has not held an official coaching position since he separated from LSU in 2021.

Orgeron went 51-20 in his five years at LSU. The program slipped after the national title in 2019 and LSU won just 11 games in Orgeron’s final two years.

Per On3’s Pete Nakos, Orgeron’s role will be a recruiting one for LSU. Orgeron is viewed as one of the top recruiters in sport, even if it’s been a few years since he was on the recruiting trail.

Orgeron is a Louisiana man through and through. He was a fan favorite when he was LSU’s head coach, and don’t expect that to change now that he’s in an assistant role.

Orgeron is already familiar with one of LSU’s top defensive linemen. A few weeks ago, he was training five-star defensive tackle Richard Anderson in Baton Rouge.
