LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt is ready to play vs. Ole Miss on Saturday night after an injury scare created uncertainty around his status earlier in the week. Leavitt went from doubtful Wednesday to questionable Thursday before the Tigers removed him from Friday’s SEC availability report.
Head coach Lane Kiffin addressed the situation Saturday morning during ESPN’s College GameDay, which broadcast from Oxford ahead of his return to face his former program.
ESPN’s Pat McAfee took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing a clip of the Tigers’ first year head coach discussing the transfer quarterback’s status remotely while a raucous crowd of Rebels fans surrounded the College GameDay set.

Leavitt missed Wednesday’s practice before returning Thursday as LSU upgraded his designation. The Tigers then removed their starting quarterback from the availability report Friday, clearing the way for him to face the Rebels. Reports differed on the specific nature of his ailment, with accounts citing an upper-body issue, back spasms or soreness in his throwing arm. LSU did not publicly specify the injury.
The Arizona State transfer enters Saturday having completed 41 of 66 passes for 574 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He has added 135 rushing yards and five scores for the 2-0 Tigers.
The matchup also marks Kiffin’s first game vs. the Rebels football team since departing from the program for LSU following the 2025 season, adding another layer to the top-10 SEC showdown.
No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss enter Saturday undefeated, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
