‘Made the Ultimate Sacrifice’ — Tributes Pour In As Kirk Herbstreit, CFB World Honor Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day

The college football world paid tribute to the country’s fallen soldiers on Memorial Day with heartfelt social media posts. While the NFL has a more dedicated approach to honoring the servicemen and women with the Salute to Service month in November, college football honors its former players and the solemnity of the day via social media.
College Football Programs Pay Tribute on Memorial Day
While centering his sons in a stirring message on X, renowned ESPN College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit led the tributes dedicated to the country’s fallen soldiers from the college football world.
“I have 4 four boys, 25-25-23-19. Today I’m thinking about the young men and women their age who gave everything for this country. Puts it all in perspective. Grateful,” Herbstreit tweeted.
The Miami Hurricanes posted an image on X of their famous Hard Rock Stadium and an American flag with the words “Remember & Honor” with the caption:
“Honoring and remembering the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” the Hurricanes tweeted.
The Big 12 champion Texas Tech Red Raiders also posted an image of soldiers running onto the Jones AT&T Stadium field with an American flag, with the caption:
“Today, we remember and honor the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” the Red Raiders tweeted.
The SEC’s Ole Miss Rebels also honored the country’s fallen troops with a simple message on X:
“Today and every day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Ole Miss tweeted.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish also posted a heartfelt message on X on Memorial Day. The Fighting Irish share a deep connection with the Navy, which helped the institution to survive during World War II, when the enlistment of college-aged students to the armed forces peaked and enrollment of new students declined.
As a result of the Navy’s help, Notre Dame pledged to play the Navy Midshipmen every season to preserve one of the longest-running rivalries in college football.
“Today, we honor the brave members of our armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,” the Fighting Irish tweeted.
Head coach Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame will play against the Navy Midshipmen on Oct. 31 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough this season to continue the two institutions’ proud history that was forged at the climax of World War II and that was poignantly honored by the Fighting Irish on Memorial Day.
