Michigan Adds Veteran Coach and Former NFL Receiver Marques Hagans to Coaching Staff

 As the Michigan Football program continues building its offensive vision under Head Coach Kyle Whittingham and Offensive Coordinator Jason Beck, the Wolverines have added a major weapon to their coaching ranks. Former Virginia standout and NFL veteran Marques Hagans officially joins Ann Arbor as the Assistant Wide Receivers Coach, bringing a rich resume of playing excellence, elite developmental history, and Big Ten recruiting pedigree to Schembechler Hall.

Hagans, who spent the past three seasons at Penn State as the wide receivers coach and offensive recruiting coordinator, arrives at Michigan with 16 seasons of collegiate coaching experience under his belt—including the last 13 dedicated exclusively to wide receivers.

From the Gridiron to the Sidelines: Playing Experience at the Highest Level

Hagans’ transition into coaching is rooted in a deep, versatile playing background. Hailing from Hampton, Virginia, Hagans starred at the University of Virginia, where he displayed dynamic versatility as both a wide receiver and quarterback. By the end of his collegiate career in Charlottesville, Hagans had solidified his legacy in the Hoos’ record books, ranking in the top-10 all-time in program history in total offense.

His athletic playmaker ability was rewarded in the 2006 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the fifth round (144th overall) by the St. Louis Rams. Hagans went on to spend five years in the NFL (2006–2010), contributing on active rosters and practice squads for the Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Redskins. That high-level playing experience translates into instant credibility in the locker room, giving Michigan receivers a coach who understands the precise footwork, route running, and mental toughness required to reach and succeed at the professional level.

A Proven Record of Wide Receiver Development

While Hagans' playing resume speaks for itself, his coaching track record in developing pass-catchers is where his addition truly shines. Across 16 total coaching seasons—spanning Virginia, Penn State, and now Michigan—Hagans has consistently produced dynamic perimeter playmakers.

During his 12-year tenure at Virginia (which included serving as Associate Head Coach in 2022), Hagans developed 10 of the top 15 all-time receptions leaders in Virginia program history. Chief among them was Olamide Zaccheaus, who set both single-season (93 catches) and career receptions records (250 catches) for the Cavaliers.

Hagans has coached 8 NFL players, directly mentoring three notable NFL draft picks:

  • Dontayvion Wicks (2023 5th Round Pick, Green Bay Packers)
  • Joe Reed (2020 5th Round Pick, Los Angeles Chargers)

Under his direct guidance, six different players earned eight All-ACC honors, highlighted by first-team selections for Isaiah Ford, Zaccheaus, and Wicks.
