Michigan State Extends Offer to 4-Star Cornerback Logan Thompson

Pat Fitzgerald and his staff are not slowing down on the recruiting trail anytime soon.

Michigan State has extended an offer to 4-star cornerback Logan Thompson, adding another highly regarded prospect to the Spartans' 2028 recruiting board.

Thompson is one of the top recruits in the 2028 class. The 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback plays for Althoff Catholic in Belleville, Illinois, and has already established himself as one of the premier defensive backs in the country.

Speed is one of Thompson's biggest strengths.

He has the ability to close quickly on opposing receivers, allowing him to stay tight in coverage and make plays on the football. His athleticism and ability to move fluidly allow him to keep pace with receivers and recover when necessary.

And Thompson isn't limited to one side of the ball.

He also excels at wide receiver, giving him legitimate two-way ability. That versatility could make him an intriguing option at the next level, depending on where a program ultimately sees his best fit.

Michigan State is now one of many major programs to offer Thompson, joining Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and many others.

That makes this an uphill recruiting battle for Michigan State cornerbacks coach Hank Poteat, who extended the offer and will be tasked with continuing to build the relationship with Thompson.

But the Spartans have an opportunity to make a statement.

If Michigan State can travel to South Bend this Saturday and pull off an enormous upset against Notre Dame, the momentum could carry over onto the recruiting trail. A victory of that magnitude would give Fitzgerald and his staff another major piece of ammunition when selling the future of Michigan State football to elite recruits.

And Thompson could be one of those recruits to watch.

According to 247Sports, Thompson is graded as a 91, which is enough for a 4-star rating. That score has him ranked as the No. 46 recruit in the 2028 class nationally.

He is also ranked as the No. 6 cornerback in the class and the No. 4 overall recruit from the state of Illinois.

His 247Sports Composite ranking is even higher.

Thompson holds a composite score of .9795, which still gives him a 4-star rating. That score ranks him No. 43 nationally in the 2028 class, while he remains the No. 6 cornerback and moves up to No. 3 among Illinois recruits.

The Spartans' secondary has become one of the most important pieces of the program.

Michigan State's defense starts up front, but the experience in the secondary this season has highlighted just how valuable that unit can be. Veterans such as Nikai Martinez, Charles Brantley and Tre Bell give the Spartans valuable experience and leadership in the defensive backfield.

Fitzgerald also retained defensive coordinator Joe Rossi and safeties coach James Adams from the previous staff, providing continuity on the defensive side of the ball.

Now, Poteat will look to add another elite piece to that secondary for the future.

Landing a recruit of Thompson's caliber would be a significant win for Michigan State. And if the Spartans can continue building momentum on the field and on the recruiting trail, Thompson could become one of the names to watch as Fitzgerald builds the next era of Michigan State football.
