Mountain Lions look to get back on track in MEC road game at West Liberty

ATHENS — While last Thursday’s 41-38 loss to Charleston was a deep disappointment, the Concord University football team hopes to cram some momentum back into the Mountain Lions’ excellent regular season start in a Mountain East Conference game at West Liberty on Saturday.

Kickoff for Concord’s longest road trip of the 2026 season is set for 1 p.m. at West Family Stadium.

Last year the Mountain Lions rolled past the Hilltoppers 44-21 but CU can probably count on a bit more resistance in this meeting. Under new head coach Chad Salisbury, who was offensive coordinator at California, Pa. For 17 seasons before taking the job, West Lib is off to a 3-1 start. The Hilltoppers are coming off a 30-24 overtime win over Frostburg at home last week.

“They present some unique challenges on both sides of the ball this week, so we’ve got to be buttoned-up in our approach,” said Concord head coach Cody Edwards in Thursday’s press conference.

The Toppers’ offense is led by running back Hunter Patterson, who has rushed for 751 yards and nine touchdowns and quarterback Kohl Meisman, who has passed for 578 yards and six touchdowns. Patterson reeled in three of those taking routes out of the backfield.

“Their running back is one of the top players in our league and they’re leading the league in rushing but you can’t that lull us to sleep because I think their quarterback throws the ball well and distributes it well to his playmakers. They have a couple receivers who can take it the distance if you give them some space,” Edwards said.

Concord’s Kevin Kargman has passed for 736 yards and four touchdowns while a committee of running backs have carried the ground game. Former Princeton standout Dom Collins is currently second in the MEC passing rankings but is the offensive explosion still waiting to happen for Concord.

Collins had his first 100-yard game of the season in last week’s loss to Charleston. The missing picture, however, is the fact that Collins had two big play touchdowns called back due to illegal blocking miles behind him. One of those was a special teams play.

Collins is just one of the reasons the third phase of the game may turn out to be the special ingredient in this contest. Another is Mountain Lions placekicker Christian Torres, who hit a 49-yard field goal n the first half of last week’s game with Charleston — the third-longest in program history.
