Former Mississippi tight end Dae'Quan Wright, who's being waived by the Cleveland Browns, has an agreement in place to join LSU if he clears waivers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Wright, a second-team All-SEC selection last season under LSU coach Lane Kiffin, signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent before he was signed by the Browns. He suited up in the Browns' preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 22, but had already secured a temporary restraining order from Louisiana state court that granted him a fifth season of college football eligibility — including the ability to enter the transfer portal.
Wright would be the first player to signed with an NFL team and return to college football. The lawsuit also included numerous other players signed by NFL teams, none of whom were drafted.
"I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out a week ago," Browns coach Todd Monken said Aug. 22. "Now I know. (Expletive) I didn't know, now I know. I didn't call him back, I guess now I should've."
Wright caught 39 passes for 635 yards with five touchdowns last season for the Rebels, also catching a touchdown in the College Football Playoff semifinals against Miami. It's unclear what his role will be, especially with standout tight end Trey'Dez Green, a common preseason All-American pick, returning to the Tigers.
Wright started his career at Virginia Tech, where he played two seasons before transferring to Ole Miss in 2024. He'll re-join forces with Kiffin, and hopes to put out more tape for NFL teams ahead of likely restarting his NFL training camp journey this time next season.
