College football did not wait long to produce a game with postseason consequences. No. 1 Ohio State visits No. 4 Texas on Saturday in Austin, placing two national-title favorites and their new-season expectations on the same field.
Neither team can win a championship in September. One of them can leave the weekend with an early résumé advantage no committee will forget.
Quarterback decisions will shape heavyweight game
Games between talented rosters often turn on which quarterback remains patient longest.
Both defenses possess enough speed to punish a passer who assumes every tight window must be challenged. The winning quarterback may not produce the largest yardage total. He may be the one who avoids the costly mistake and keeps the offense out of obvious passing downs.
Texas also gains the environmental advantage.
A loud Austin crowd can affect protections, snap timing and communication. Ohio State must avoid allowing one early penalty or negative play to turn into a series of rushed decisions.
The Buckeyes’ best response is balance.
An effective running game can slow Texas’ pass rush and create manageable play-action opportunities. Texas faces the same challenge against an Ohio State defense built to make opponents one-dimensional.

Result will reshape national race
The loser will not be eliminated from the College Football Playoff. An expanded postseason provides room for recovery, particularly after a competitive loss against an elite opponent. The result will still influence rankings, conference pressure and the path toward hosting playoff games.
The winner gains a signature victory before most contenders have faced a ranked opponent. That advantage becomes useful later when teams with similar records are compared.
The matchup also offers an early test of whether preseason expectations were built on complete teams or recognizable names. Depth, special teams and fourth-quarter conditioning will matter as much as star power.
Ohio State owns the No. 1 ranking.
Texas owns the home field.
Saturday will determine which advantage matters more and give the national championship conversation its first substantial piece of evidence.
