ESPN had enough trouble explaining how Oklahoma State stunned Oregon. Then, according to Brett McMurphy, the network briefly managed to make Cowboys quarterback Drew Mestemaker look like an entirely different kind of passer.

Brett McMurphy Jokes ESPN Turned Drew Mestemaker Left-Handed

Oklahoma State knocked off No. 6 Oregon 39-31 on Saturday, snapping a 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents and giving Eric Morris his first win as the Cowboys’ head coach.

Mestemaker was at the center of it all, accounting for 426 total yards and three touchdowns in one of the first major upsets of the 2026 season. McMurphy, the longtime college football insider who previously worked at ESPN and now reports for On3, spotted something odd in the network’s postgame highlight package.

McMurphywrote afterward, “Oklahoma State broke ESPN. The network showed a reverse image highlight – a left-handed Drew Mestemaker – vs. Oregon. Sources: Mestemaker is 1st QB to throw TDs right- and left-handed in Top 10 upset.”

The final sentence, of course, was McMurphy’s joke, not an actual statistical achievement. Mestemaker is right-handed. His point was that reversing the video image made the Oklahoma State quarterback appear to be throwing with his left hand, producing a strange visual after an afternoon that had already gone wildly off script.

That was about the only thing involving Mestemaker that needed fixing. The redshirt sophomore threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards and a score against Oregon.

Oklahoma State entered as a 23.5-point underdog and had not beaten an FBS opponent in 21 consecutive tries.

Drew Mestemaker Gives Oklahoma State a Signature Win

The performance was a dramatic response to Mestemaker’s Oklahoma State debut. He threw for 241 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a 24-10 loss to Tulsa before showing up and showing out against Oregon one week later.

His path to Stillwater had already made him one of the offseason’s more interesting quarterback stories. Mestemaker followed Morris from North Texas after leading the nation in passing yards in 2025, and hisportal move was among the winter’s most notable quarterback developments.

The upset also flipped last year’s matchup on its head. Oregon crushed Oklahoma State 69-3 in Eugene in 2025, only for the Cowboys to respond one season later by handing a top-six Ducks team its first loss.

Mestemaker helped Oklahoma State answer every second-half push Saturday, including a go-ahead 10-yard touchdown run after Oregon briefly took a 31-30 lead in the fourth quarter.

For Oklahoma State, the afternoon ended with fans celebrating one of the most improbable wins in recent program history. For ESPN, the highlight reel apparently added one more twist.

Mestemaker beat Oregon, throwing right-handed. The reversed clip just gave McMurphy an opening to credit him with doing it both ways.
