With the Michigan State football program now being led by Pat Fitzgerald, being the successor to Jontahan Smith, the head coach is looking to bring back the Spartans to relevance. While some may categorize the 2025 season as uninspiring for the Michigan football team, Fitzgerald looks to change that as he talks about the fit of the program.

Fitzgerald had been the head coach of Northwestern from 2006 to 2022, having been fired due to hazing allegations, but as soon as that matter had been settled, he came back to coaching. After being three seasons away from being a head coach, he’s back with the Spartans and expressed to SiriusXM College Sports Radio why it’s a “perfect fit.”

“It was just a perfect fit,” Fitzgerald said, via On3 Sports. “When I sat down and talked to our great president here, Kevin Guskiewicz, and our terrific athletic director, J Batt, to see them aligned, to hear their alignment, to hear their vision, and to talk about where this football program needs to get back to and their plan to get us there, it was a no-brainer.”

“Frankly, there were some other opportunities that I think this is the perfect fit,” Fitzgerald continued. “I’m a Big Ten guy. To be at a place that has such a storied tradition, amazing fans. Then, to get here and to live it starting in early December, our students are incredible. Just excited to get back to work.”

At any rate, Fitzgerald looks to start his first season with the Michigan State football team with a bang, as the last season under Jones finished with a 4-8 record, 1-8 in conference play. The regular-season opener for the Spartans will be against the Toledo Rockets on Saturday, Sept. 5.
