Penn State has proven during this recruiting cycle that they aren’t overly concerned about prospects’ rankings. They’ve earned commitments from more than 20 players from the Class of 2027, with the pool consisting of unranked, three-star, and four-star athletes.
Despite their willingness to pursue less glamorous prospects, it doesn’t mean the Nittany Lions are afraid to go after some big fish. They were one of the finalists for five-star quarterback Will Mencl, one of the top players in 2027, before he chose the Oregon Ducks instead. Penn State may have swung and missed on him, but now they have shifted their focus to one of the most promising running backs in the nation.
Jayshawn Mitchell is a four-star halfback from Texas who is already one of the top targets for great teams all around the country. After already receiving offers from Big Ten powerhouses Oregon and Ohio State, Penn State decided to join the fray and extend Mitchell an offer as well.
Penn State offers blue chip running back Jayshawn Mitchell out of San Antonio (Texas) Brennan.

It could be a good idea for the school to dip its toes back into the southern part of the country after its most recent commitment, Dhillon McGee, also came from Texas. Not only did they get a recruit from this same state, but McGhee chose the Nittany Lions over his hometown team, the Texas Longhorns, who have also offered Mitchell.
Penn State’s recent success in Texas and its potent running back history could be a significant factor in the four-star running back’s decision. Snagging Mitchell would add another blue-chip prospect to a class that already has two.
