The Los Angeles Rams are good for this year when it comes to quarterback, because they have Matthew Stafford fresh off an MVP win. It doesn't get much better than that.

But, Sean McVay is a guy who likes to look to the future. He's not a last-minute kind of fellow. With that in mind, it really shouldn't have been a surprise to see the Rams draft Tyler Simpson in the draft this year as a possible franchise quarterback of the future.

It was still a surprise to see a team with a solid quarterback pull off that feat, but it makes sense. Now, Simpson is performing so well that he may be proving that he's ready to get on the field sooner than expected.

Ty Simpson is putting pressure on the Rams' backup QB battle

Sarah Barshop of ESPN gives Simpson kudos in a feature discussing the NFL rookies and how they're performing in camp. In fact, Simpson is doing so well that he may be putting serious pressure on Stetson Bennett.

Even though Bennett got most of the early No. 2 reps, Simpson's strong preseason performances have made him a real contender.

As Barshop notes, "Simpson impressed in his first preseason game, completing 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. After the game, McVay said he thought Simpson had 'good command' of the offense."

She adds, "In his second preseason game, Simpson played the second half but got just three series; he completed 8 of 12 passes for 73 yards. And he capped off his preseason with 119 passing yards on Thursday night."

Those are numbers that are hard to ignore. McVay won't ignore them, either. If Stafford gets injured, which hopefully doesn't happen, but if it does, Simpson could move up the ladder.
