Recruiting Round-Up: One commit down, more to come for Texas?

This past weekend was a busy one in Austin. Multiple big-time targets came to Austin for their official visits, and the consensus is Texas knocked it out of the park. Texas gained a commitment from someone who wasn’t on campus and seemingly positioned themselves for more in the coming weeks. This next month will be as active as any in the recruiting cycle and Texas seems to have put themselves in a good position.

Here is where Texas stands with some of the major targets currently:

Briceson Thrower – Texas WR Commit

This is the commitment the Longhorns did pick up this weekend. The three-star WR from North Forney High School has joined Easton Royal as the WRs in the Longhorns class. At 6 '4”, he brings the length the class lacked at WR and has the ability to develop into a true X-WR for the Longhorns. He’ll be in Austin this weekend and I don’t expect much movement in this recruitment after that. This is a really high-ceiling addition to the class.

Jalen Brewster – Texas DL Target

One of the surprises of the week was Jalen Brewster, the No. 1 prospect in the country and Texas Tech commit, coming to Austin for a visit. It seems Texas did a nice job inserting themselves into this recruitment, but pulling him from Texas Tech could prove to be impossible. This was a recruitment Texas had to at least throw their hat into the ring for, but I expect Texas Tech to hold onto this recruitment.

John Meredith – Texas CB Target

It’s been well known for some time that this is a Texas vs. Texas A&M recruitment. That has not changed at all. It will still be an in-state battle, unless Miami is able to reel in a visit at the last moment. Regardless of if Miami(or SMU) get involved, it seems a decision could come any time now and Texas is the narrow favorite.

Jabarrious Garror – Texas EDGE Target

This is the biggest piece of news outside the Thrower commitment. Jabarrious Garror, talented four-star EDGE, is someone Texas has circled recently and seemingly made quite the impression this weekend. He’s currently slated to visit Florida State this weekend and commit on July 4th, but he said the commitment timeline could be pushed up after this weekend. This is one to watch for a Texas commitment in the next week or two.

Marcus Fakatou – Texas DL Target

One of the other major battles Texas is enthralled in is around Marcus Fakatou. The five-star composite DL was in Austin this weekend and it seems Texas made up quite a bit of ground on the leaders, Ohio State. Fakatou will visit Oregon this weekend and Notre Dame next week with a decision likely shortly after. Right now, Ohio State seems to be in pole position but this could be a major win for Texas to steal this commitment.

Junior Tu’upo – Texas S Target

Another major positive movement happened around the Alabama safety product. Junior Tu’upo, the four-star composite safety, was in Austin this weekend and said Texas was the leader as he left Austin. Now, he will make his way to Alabama and Auburn this weekend, so this could change very quickly, but a massive weekend for Texas’ chances. The Longhorns class lacks a top-tier safety and options are running thin, so this would be a major win for Texas if they can get the commitment.

Trenton Blaylock – Texas DB Target

This could be the biggest toss-up recruitment on this list. Trenton Blaylock, the three-star CB, was in Austin this weekend and the recruitment is split nearly 50/50 between Texas and Oklahoma. Blaylock will make his way to Norman this weekend and then Florida State the following weekend. A commitment date isn’t set right now, but one should come shortly after the final visit. That commitment is shaping up to be a Longhorns-Sooners affair.

Niemann Lawrence – 2028 Texas QB Target

Finally, we move to 2028 and to one of the top QBs in the country, Niemann Lawrence. The Florida product took over the starting job at American Heritage High School from Texas QB Dia Bell, transferring in from Miami-Northwestern. He’s shined ever since he’s touched the field, earning Freshman All-American honors. His physical ability is as good as any QB in the class and with a commitment coming up, it seems Texas will be the choice here.

Current Commits Locked In

TE Brock Williams – The four-star TE has become one of the biggest recruiters among the class.

RB Noah Roberts – Roberts has cancelled all over official visits, saying he’s locked in with the Longhorns.

DL Derwin Fields – Fields cancelled upcoming visits as well and figures to be another recruiter for this class.
