Report: A 20-team College Football Playoff format could be discussed on Monday

The College Football Playoff will stay at 12 teams for the 2026 college football season, but that could change in future seasons.

There has been a lot of talk about CFP expansion over the past year, and that’s expected to continue. According to ESPN’s Heather Dinich, the leaders of the CFP could possibly discuss a 20-team field during a meeting on Monday, Aug. 10.

A lot of talk has centered around 16-team and 24-team formats, but it seems the crew is at least considering 20 teams.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports added to Dinich’s report, saying that ESPN is talking to the CFP leaders about a 16-team format with four play-in games for the final four spots. In other words, those play-in games would make it a 20-team format before it goes to 16.

No decision is expected on CFP expansion on Monday, and there will be more talks about it in the fall.

In the meantime, the 2026 college football season begins on Aug. 29 with some good games, including North Carolina-TCU and NC State-Virginia.
