Starting DB says UNC defense can be dominant despite Notre Dame loss

Defense proved the main reason behind UNC's 2-win start to its 2026 football season. Defense is also a major reason in North Carolina's past two losses.

The Tar Heels faced their toughest test this fall on Saturday: third-ranked Notre Dame. Despite a few momentum-shifting moments throughout, including an opening drive stop and turnover on downs, UNC's defense allowed a season-worst 475 yards during the 37-26 loss.

After North Carolina's defeat, defensive back Jaiden Patterson highlighted why the Fighting Irish played so well offensively, then shifted to how his team can re-create its September defensive dominance.

“We just had a couple little miscommunications," Patterson said. "When we were playing complementary football, we were really executing and we were able to stop them. Once we tighten all that stuff up, we’re really going to be a dominant defense and I believe in that.”

Patterson anchored the Tar Heels' secondary, totaling seven tackles and two pass breakups. Patterson helped UNC force a three-and-out on Notre Dame's third drive, followed by a turnover on downs that led to a North Carolina touchdown.

Fans have every reason to believe Patterson's statement. The Tar Heels held ETSU and TCU to a combined 13 points and under 300 yards each. UNC kept Clemson at six points entering halftime, before collapsing in an 8-point loss.

Next up for North Carolina is a 5-0 Pitt squad, which averages 478 yards per game. The Panther offense will have another starting quarterback, though, with Mason Heintschel recently tearing his ACL.

Can the Tar Heels fix their defensive issues and start winning games again?
