The Morning Memory: College Football Is Still Alright

Admittedly there is a lot of cynicism surrounding college football, and college athletics generally, these days. And that’s definitely justified.The television people and the agents and the private equity stuffed Patagonia vests are mostly in charge, and the rest of us who actually give a dang about the sport often feel either ignored or taken for granted. It’s tempting to look back on a far-off halcyon yesteryear, when things were simpler and better, and to wonder how long the sport will survive.
I find however that those sentiments tend to be most prominent during the long offseason, when the business side of college football is on full, hideous display. Once the games actually kick off we’re reminded that college football is still a whole lot of fun. It retains the power to excite, to captivate, and even to inspire like no other show on turf.
Just consider Senior Day at Sanford Stadium on November 20, 2021. That team would of course go on to break a four decade long drought by winning a national title only a few weeks later, but we didn’t know that at the time. We just knew there were a lot of special footballs players on that team. And few were more special than Jordan Davis.
The big guy began his Senior Day celebration in the first quarter by going over the goal line on a one yard run for the first touchdown of his collegiate career. Then after the Dawgs finished off Charleston Southern 56-7, Davis received an honor few expected.
A lot of people did not know that Davis had friends in the Redcoats Band, and in addition to being a fantastic singer, has a penchant for conducting. It was one of those moments that is really only possible in college football. So on this morning, with only a scant handful of Saturday mornings between you and college football, rest assured that there will be magical moments in 2026, and know that we can’t wait to share them with you in these digital pages.
