The Real Reason Ole Miss Remained Skeptical Of Sam Leavitt’s Injury Status All Week

Sam Leavitt is set to start at quarterback for LSU Tigers against No. 8 Ole Miss. His status changed quickly this week, going from doubtful to questionable before he was removed from the injury report entirely.

The news comes as Lane Kiffin makes his first return to Oxford since taking over at LSU. With Leavitt cleared, the Tigers will have their starting quarterback for the SEC opener.

Sam Leavitt clears injury report ahead of LSU-Ole Miss game

Sam Leavitt was removed from the SEC injury report Friday night, clearing the way for him to face No. 8 Ole Miss. The quarterback was first listed as doubtful on Wednesday before being upgraded to questionable Thursday after taking part in LSU’s walkthrough.

Leavitt did not practice Wednesday, and reports during the week said he was dealing with soreness in his throwing shoulder. LSU did not publicly list a specific injury on its official report.

The Arizona State transfer has started both of LSU’s games this season. He has completed 41 of 66 passes for 574 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also rushed 23 times for 135 yards and five touchdowns.

Leavitt’s latest performance came in LSU’s 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. He completed 25 of 38 passes for 344 yards and one touchdown while scoring three rushing touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions in the game.

Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt made his LSU debut against Clemson in the season opener after joining Lane Kiffin’s offense. His return to the field now gives LSU another key piece heading into its first SEC game of the season.

Yahoo Sports then shared the update on X with the caption, “Sam Leavitt is good to go for tomorrow’s showdown with No. 8 Ole Miss []”

The SEC requires teams to release an injury report every Wednesday, with updates on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Leavitt’s removal from the report means LSU will have its regular starting quarterback available for the game.

LSU enters the matchup 2-0 and ranked No. 7, while Ole Miss is also 2-0 and ranked No. 8. The game is scheduled for Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Lane Kiffin returns to Ole Miss for LSU showdown while daughter Landry faced criticism from fans

Lane Kiffin will return to Ole Miss as LSU’s head coach after leaving the Rebels following the 2025 season. He spent six seasons at Ole Miss and went 55-19. His return to Oxford comes in LSU’s SEC opener against the program he led for six seasons.

Leavitt is expected to play a central role in LSU’s offense this season. Kiffin’s return has also brought a response from Ole Miss fans. Extra security has been planned around the stadium and campus, with state and local law enforcement adding personnel for the game.

Lane Kiffin’s daughter Landry Kiffin also addressed inappropriate comments directed at her on social media during the buildup to the game, saying she should not be part of the dispute surrounding her father’s return. She said, “I think that turning a girl into the punchline of a sexual joke because you’re upset at somebody she’s related to should not be okay. I understand emotions are high this week and people are upset, but I’m my own person.”

Several Ole Miss players will be important to Kiffin in his return. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has 561 passing yards, five touchdowns and one interception through two games. Running back Kewan Lacy has 148 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Deuce Alexander has 235 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

LSU also has players with connections to Ole Miss. Edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen transferred from Ole Miss to LSU and has five sacks this season. Linebacker TJ Dottery has been one of LSU’s leading tacklers, while tight end Trey’Dez Green is one of the Tigers’ main receiving options.

With Leavitt available and both teams entering undefeated, LSU and Ole Miss will meet in one of the SEC’s most anticipated early-season matchups.
