Entering the 2026 college football season, UCF is looking to right the ship during head coach Scott Frost's second year back with the program.
Last season was a choppy one, as the Knights struggled to string together wins, especially in conference play and on the road.
Hopefully, the latter has been focused on as an area of improvement, as UCF has an early road showdown against Pittsburgh, a formidable foe in the ACC.
Outside of the early-season matchup this year, UCF and Pitt have some significant history, with the last meeting between the two teams marking the end of the Knights' remarkable 27-game win streak in 2019.
Prior to the matchup, UCF had not lost a regular season game in nearly two full seasons, riding the momentum of Mackenzie Milton and Dillon Gabriel.
Gabriel, who was the starting quarterback in this game, filled up the stat sheet, recording 338 yards passing and two touchdowns.
On the other side of the field was future NFL first-round pick Kenny Pickett, who's numbers did not jump off the charts, but had the biggest play of the game with less than a minute to go.
The Panthers dialed up a "Philly Special" type play on fourth down with three yards to go until the endzone, as wide receiver Aaron Matthews found Pickett for a go-ahead score.
This 35-34 win marked the second victory over the Knights for Pittsburgh, as the Panthers lead the all-time series 2-1.
This year, the quarterback duel may very well be the story again, as both programs feel good about their signal callers under center.
Sophomore Pittsburgh gunslinger Mason Heintschel had a solid freshman campaign last season, throwing for 2,354 yards, 16 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.
The 6-foot-2 Oregon native also added two scores with his legs.
Following an early graduation from high school, Heintschel posted a 6–3 record as Pitt's starter, becoming the first ACC freshman in the last 30 seasons to throw for 400 yards and three touchdowns in a game, doing so early in the year against NC State.
For UCF, Alonza Barnett III brings experience and winning pedigree to the program, having led James Madison to a College Football Playoff berth last season.
Barnett was electric in his lone CFP appearance, scoring three total touchdowns and accumulating over 310 total yards against a stout Oregon defense.
The former Duke recently talked about the "addicting" feeling of playing in a game of that magnitude, and said that his goal for his final collegiate season is to return to the postseason.
Beating the Panthers would be a step in the right direction for bringing that to fruition.
