What Brendan Sorsby needs to accomplish to put his scandal behind him

College football has directed its attention and its vitriol towards Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby after he was granted an injunction that will allow him to suit up for the Red Raiders this season. It's a ruling that allows the embattled quarterback to move forward while the college football world continues to look back at the bets he admitted to placing while at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech after his transfer in January.

At present, it feels like this scandal will follow Sorsby for the rest of his football career, whether it lasts one more year or for the next decade. With that said, there are still games for Sorsby to play (like it or not), and fans know that athletes have ample opportunity to put scathing narratives behind them.

With that said, what would Sorsby have to do to put this distraction behind him? The Red Raiders passer is set to miss the first two games of the season, and is eligible to return for the Big 12 opener against Houston.

Sorsby still has a chance to put up strong numbers in what figures to be a high-octane offense, but the missed games will probably rule him out of legitimate Heisman Trophy consideration. That's unfortunate, because bringing home the highest individual honor in the country despite the whirlwind of controversy could have been one of the all-time redemption stories.

Instead of statistics and personal accolades, team success could be what gets Sorsby's name out of the negative spotlight. The opportunity is right there in front of him; Texas Tech got smoked 23-0 in the Orange Bowl last year, leaving a lot of room for improvement and an opening for a polarizing savior to take the Red Raiders deeper into the College Football Playoff.

Sorsby's 2026 campaign will be the true test of the "winning cures all" sports cliche, but it really could be the elixir that proves to teammates and fans alike that the talented passer is all-in on Texas Tech.

Whether or not he turns the page will easily be one of the most compelling narratives of the college football season.
