Where does Byrum Brown land in The Athletic's starting QB tier list?

Auburn Tigers' quarterback Byrum Brown proved over multiple seasons that he can successfully lead a high-powered offense in the American Athletic Conference. This season as a senior, Brown has one chance to do the same in the SEC.

Brown was one of 13 players to follow Alex Golesh from USF to Auburn this offseason, and has something to prove. Brown hopes to find the same success on the Plains as he did in Tampa, and, if so, will push Auburn to new heights and will make him a popular name among NFL scouts before next year's draft.

The Athletic recently ranked each projected starting FBS quarterback ahead of the 2026 season and placed each quarterback into tiers. Entering the new season, Brown resides in Tier 3 and ranks No. 19 overall.

Antonio Morales and Sam Khan Jr of The Athletic, who compiled the ranking, are impressed with Brown's resume. However, they are anticipating seeing how well Brown's game translates to the grind of the SEC. One anonymous SEC General Manager believes that Brown's size and his familiarity with the offensive scheme will earn him respect rather quickly.

“(Brown) Maybe not getting enough credit right now. …he’s a winner and he’s big,” one SEC GM told The Athletic.

Brown missed out on being named to the preseason All-SEC team, but has the chance to end the season with a nod. Heading into the season, here's how Brown compares to the rest of the SEC's quarterbacks according to The Athletic's tiers:

  • Tier 1: Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), Arch Manning (Texas), Sam Leavitt (LSU)
  • Tier 2: Gunner Stockton (Georgia), Marcel Reed (Texas A&M), John Mateer (Oklahoma)
  • Tier 3: Lanorris Sellers (South Carolina), Byrum Brown (Auburn), Austin Simmons (Missouri)
  • Tier 4: Kamario Taylor (Mississippi State), Keelon Russell (Alabama), Kenny Minchey (Kentucky)
  • Tier 5: Aaron Philo (Florida), Jared Curtis (Vanderbilt), KJ Jackson (Arkansas)
  • Tier 6: Faizon Brandon (Tennessee)
